Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him,“ Follow me!”

且知吾之脫離此宅、即在目前、正如吾主耶穌之所預示也。

耶穌曰：『縱欲留彼於世、以俟予之重來、亦何與於汝？汝惟從予而已！』

不負其十字架、而追踵於我者、非吾徒也。

西門伯鐸祿問曰：『主將奚往？』耶穌對曰：『予之所往、爾今難從、異日當得追隨耳。』伯鐸祿曰：『今亦曷為弗克相隨乎？雖為主致命、亦所甘心！』

耶穌此言、所以預示其如何致命也。

亦所以償吾心期、終不致有所愧忝。因是平生勇氣、至今未衰。必欲獻吾之身、以弘基督。生可也、死亦可也。

耶穌顧視門徒、謂伯鐸祿曰：『沙殫退去！爾不體主旨、惟體人意。』更謂眾及門徒曰：『人欲從予、必先舍己、負其十字架而隨我後。欲救其生者、將喪其生；為予及福音而舍其生者、終必獲生。人雖富有天下、苟失其生、亦有何益？且更將以何物易其生乎？處此淫邪之世、而以吾及吾道為恥者、人子佩聖父榮光、偕聖天神降臨之日、亦必以其人為可恥也。』

且曰人子尚須備嘗苦難、為長老司祭經生所棄、終且被害、第三目復活。耶穌諭眾曰：『人欲從予、務宜克己、日負其十字架、而隨予後。蓋欲自保其生者、反將失之、惟為予之故、而舍其生者、克保其生。人即富有天下、而喪亡其真我、亦有何益？蓋凡以予及吾道為恥者、則人子憑己威光、且憑聖父聖天神之威光、赫然臨格時、亦必以其人為恥也。

自是耶穌始預示其徒、彼須往耶路撒冷、將陷於長老、經生、司祭之手、備受凌辱、乃至被殺；第三日復活。伯鐸祿挽而諫之曰：『主、萬無此理、願此事之莫臨爾身也。』耶穌顧謂伯鐸祿曰：『沙殫退去！汝為我梗。汝但體人情、不體天意。』乃諭諸徒曰：『人欲從予、必須克己、負其十字架、而追隨予後。凡惜其生者、失之；惟為予而捨其生者、得之；

凡任宣講者、當講述聖道、一若為天主之舌人者；其任服務者、則當依天主所賦之才力、儘量貢獻。總之、任作何事、務求以耶穌基督之名、歸榮天主。但願天主享受光榮與德能、永世靡暨、心焉祝之。親愛之同道乎、爾等之受煆煉、所以玉汝於成、切勿大驚小怪、一若遭遇不測也者。應知此乃可喜之事。蓋爾等既得與基督共患難、則於彼光榮顯現之日、必得與之同樂、將不知手之舞之、足之蹈之矣。爾等若果因基督之名而受唾罵、福莫大焉！蓋誠能如此、則光榮大能之聖神、天主之聖神、以爾為安宅矣。

耶穌曾預示其致命之情形、於是驗矣。

人欲事我、宜亦步亦趨、追踵於我、庶幾我之所詣、吾僕亦克詣焉。人能事我、父必榮之。

耶穌曰：『吾實語爾、爾曹從我者、至復活時、人子坐於榮座、爾曹亦必坐於十二寶座、審判義塞十二支派。
