“ Lord,” Simon Peter said to him,“ where are you going?” Jesus answered,“ Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”“ Lord,” Peter asked,“ why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.

My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death.

But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said,“ Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them,“ If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it.For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life?What can anyone give in exchange for his life?For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

saying,“ It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”Then he said to them all,“ If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels.

Samuel replied,“ Don’t be afraid. Even though you have committed all this evil, don’t turn away from following the LORD. Instead, worship the LORD with all your heart.

From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him,“ Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to you!”Jesus turned and told Peter,“ Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.

If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you.Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.

If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant also will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

But since my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has remained loyal to me, I will bring him into the land where he has gone, and his descendants will inherit it.
