Jesus said a third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time,“ Do you love me?” and said,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus replied,“ Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time,“ Do you have affection for me?” He said to him,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed my sheep.

Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”

A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Jesus answered him,“ Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him,“ Feed My lambs.”He said to him again a second time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him,“ Tend My sheep.”

I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while.Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them,“ Whom are you seeking?”

Does He not see my ways, And count all my steps?“ If I have walked with falsehood, Or if my foot has hastened to deceit,Let me be weighed on honest scales, That God may know my integrity.

Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle( in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

For He does not afflict willingly, Nor grieve the children of men.

I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.

I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

“ The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, He knows, and let Israel itself know— if it is in rebellion, or if in treachery against the Lord, do not save us this day.

For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

The Lord shall judge the peoples; Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, And according to my integrity within me.Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, But establish the just; For the righteous God tests the hearts and minds.

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but all of you to some extent— not to be too severe.This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man,so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

And they prayed and said,“ You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen

So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,

For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you,knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.

If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

So she said to Elijah,“ What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”

You have tested my heart; You have visited me in the night; You have tried me and have found nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter,“ Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.”Then he began to curse and swear, saying,“ I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed.And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

I know also, my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here to offer willingly to You.

Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.

But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

And the King will answer and say to them,‘ Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,

“ If you love Me, keep My commandments.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. (niv)
