He saith unto him the third time, Simon,[ son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time,“ Do you have affection for me?” He said to him,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed my sheep.

Now we know that you know everything and do not need anyone to ask you anything. Because of this we believe that you have come from God.”

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him:“ Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Jesus answered,“ Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!

Then when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these do?” He replied,“ Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus told him,“ Feed my lambs.”Jesus said a second time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He replied,“ Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus told him,“ Shepherd my sheep.”

Furthermore, I will strike her followers with a deadly disease, and then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts. I will repay each one of you what your deeds deserve.

For even if I made you sad by my letter, I do not regret having written it( even though I did regret it, for I see that my letter made you sad, though only for a short time).Now I rejoice, not because you were made sad, but because you were made sad to the point of repentance. For you were made sad as God intended, so that you were not harmed in any way by us.For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.For see what this very thing, this sadness as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what punishment! In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

For our reason for confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives and sincerity which are from God– not by human wisdom but by the grace of God– we conducted ourselves in the world, and all the more toward you.

Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them,“ Who are you looking for?”

Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?If I have walked in falsehood, and if my foot has hastened to deceit–let him weigh me with honest scales; then God will discover my integrity.

Dear friends, this is already the second letter I have written you, in which I am trying to stir up your pure mind by way of reminder:

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

For he is not predisposed to afflict or to grieve people.ל( Lamed)

I, the LORD, probe into people’s minds. I examine people’s hearts. I deal with each person according to how he has behaved. I give them what they deserve based on what they have done.

I am not saying this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love by comparison with the eagerness of others.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that you by his poverty could become rich.

“ El, God, the LORD! El, God, the LORD! He knows the truth! Israel must also know! If we have rebelled or disobeyed the LORD, don’t spare us today!

For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!”

The LORD judges the nations. Vindicate me, LORD, because I am innocent, because I am blameless, O Exalted One!May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end! But make the innocent secure, O righteous God, you who examine inner thoughts and motives!

For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not to make you sad, but to let you know the love that I have especially for you.But if anyone has caused sadness, he has not saddened me alone, but to some extent( not to exaggerate) he has saddened all of you as well.This punishment on such an individual by the majority is enough for him,so that now instead you should rather forgive and comfort him. This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair.

Then they prayed,“ Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosen

And God, who knows the heart, has testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,

Therefore, I intend to remind you constantly of these things even though you know them and are well established in the truth that you now have.Indeed, as long as I am in this tabernacle, I consider it right to stir you up by way of a reminder,since I know that my tabernacle will soon be removed, because our Lord Jesus Christ revealed this to me.Indeed, I will also make every effort that, after my departure, you have a testimony of these things.

If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.

She asked Elijah,“ Why, prophet, have you come to me to confront me with my sin and kill my son?”

You have scrutinized my inner motives; you have examined me during the night. You have carefully evaluated me, but you find no sin. I am determined I will say nothing sinful.

After a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said,“ You really are one of them too– even your accent gives you away!”At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath,“ I do not know the man!” At that moment a rooster crowed.Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said:“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

We have come to know love by this: that Jesus laid down his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians.But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.And by this we will know that we are of the truth and will convince our conscience in his presence,that if our conscience condemns us, that God is greater than our conscience and knows all things.Dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God,and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him.Now this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he gave us the commandment.And the person who keeps his commandments resides in God, and God in him. Now by this we know that God resides in us: by the Spirit he has given us.

I know, my God, that you examine thoughts and are pleased with integrity. With pure motives I contribute all this; and now I look with joy as your people who have gathered here contribute to you.

Then Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people.He did not need anyone to testify about man, for he knew what was in man.

And the king will answer them,‘ I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me.’

This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials.

“ If you love me, you will obey my commandments.
