He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time,“ Do you love Me?” And he said to Him,“ Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed My sheep.

He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

He asked him the third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time,“ Do you love Me?” He said,“ Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.”“ Feed My sheep,” Jesus said.

He saith unto him the third time, Simon,[ son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Jesus said a third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time,“ Do you love me?” and said,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus replied,“ Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time,“ Do you have affection for me?” He said to him,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed my sheep.

Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we believe that You came forth from God.”

And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him,“ Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he hurried on and began to weep.

Jesus* replied,“ Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Now when they had finished breakfast, Jesus* said to Simon Peter,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He* said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He* said to him,“ Tend My lambs.”He* said to him again, a second time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He* said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He* said to him,“ Shepherd My sheep.”

And I will kill her children with plague, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it— for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while—I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us.For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter.

For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.

And then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him,“ Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and* said to them,“ Whom are you seeking?”

Does He not see my ways, And count all my steps?“ If I have walked with deception, And my foot has hurried after deceit,Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.

Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of a reminder,

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

For He does not afflict willingly Or grieve the sons of mankind.

I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, To give to each person according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.

I am not saying this as a command, but as proving, through the earnestness of others, the sincerity of your love as well.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

“ The Mighty One, God, the Lord, the Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows, and may Israel itself know. If it was in rebellion, or if in an unfaithful act against the Lord, do not save us this day!

For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

The Lord judges the peoples; Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me.Please let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; For the righteous God puts hearts and minds to the test.

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you.But if anyone has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not for me, but in some degree— not to say too much— for all of you.Sufficient for such a person is this punishment which was imposed by the majority,so that on the other hand, you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a person might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

And they prayed and said,“ You, Lord, who know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen

And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us;

Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in the truth which is present with you.I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder,knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.

So she said to Elijah,“ Why is my business any of yours, you man of God? Yet you have come to me to bring my wrongdoing to remembrance, and to put my son to death!”

You have put my heart to the test; You have visited me by night; You have sifted me and You find nothing; My intent is that my mouth will not offend.

A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter,“ You really are one of them as well, since even the way you talk gives you away.”Then he began to curse and swear,“ I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had made:“ Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him,that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things.Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;and whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.The one who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Since I know, my God, that You put the heart to the test and delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You.

Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, because He knew all people,and because He did not need anyone to testify about mankind, for He Himself knew what was in mankind.

And the King will answer and say to them,‘ Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’

In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,

“ If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. (niv)
