耶穌還在對群眾講話的時候，他的母親和弟弟站在外面，要找他講話。

這不是那木匠嗎？不是馬利亞的兒子，雅各、約西、猶大、西門的哥哥嗎？他的妹妹們不也在我們這裡嗎？”他們就厭棄耶穌。

耶穌的弟弟就對他說：“你應當離開這裡上猶太去，好讓你的門徒也可以看見你所行的事；因為沒有人想引人注目，卻在暗處行事的。你既然行這些事，就應該向世人顯明自己。”原來連他的弟弟也不信他。

他們進了城，上了一間樓房，就是彼得、約翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多馬、巴多羅邁、馬太、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、激進派的西門、雅各的兒子猶大等人所住的。這些人和幾個婦女，耶穌的母親馬利亞，還有他的兄弟們，都在一起，同心地恆切禱告。

難道我們沒有權利，像其餘的使徒、主的弟兄和磯法一樣，帶著信主的妻子往來嗎？

至於其餘的使徒，除了主的弟弟雅各以外，我都沒有見過。

他不是木匠的兒子嗎？他母親不是馬利亞，他弟弟不是雅各、約瑟、西門和猶大嗎？他妹妹不是都在我們這裡嗎？他這一切是從哪裡來的呢？”

迦百農啊！你會被高舉到天上嗎？你必降到陰間。在你那裡行過的神蹟，如果行在所多瑪，那城還會存留到今天。

他們上了船，要渡海往迦百農去。那時天已經黑了，耶穌還沒有到他們那裡。
