The Jewish leaders insisted,“ We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him: Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death; the whole community is to stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the resident alien or the native.

But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”“ You have said it,” Jesus told him.“ But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.What is your decision?” They answered,“ He deserves death!”

and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead.

do you say,‘ You are blaspheming’ to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?If I am not doing my Father’s works, don’t believe me.But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand that the Father is in me and I in the Father.”

When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said,“ Truly this man was the Son of God!”

I and the Father are one.”Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone him.Jesus replied,“ I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me?”“ We aren’t stoning you for a good work,” the Jews answered,“ but for blasphemy, because you— being a man— make yourself God.”

But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ Why do we still need witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy. What is your decision?” They all condemned him as deserving death.

“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God; let God rescue him now— if he takes pleasure in him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, before Abraham was, I am.”So they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple.

But the prophet who presumes to speak a message in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods— that prophet must die.’
