Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.

Later Joseph asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. Joseph was from the town of Arimathea. He was a follower of Jesus. But he followed Jesus secretly because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. After Pilate gave him permission, Joseph came and took the body away.

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.

既暮、有富人若瑟者、亞利馬太人、亦耶穌弟子也。進謁比辣多、求耶穌遺體比辣多即許之。若瑟既得遺體、裹以潔布、葬於己之生壙、壙由嚴石渾然鑿成者也。乃移鉅石、封閉墓門而返。瑪達蘭之馬麗及瑪利亞、對墓兀坐。

而多數宗主之兄弟、因予之被囚、舉相率鼓其勇氣、再接再厲、以大無畏之精神、弘宣天主之道。

是為大禮日前夕。既暮、貴顯議士若瑟、亞別瑪德人、素慕天主國者、毅然入謁比辣多、求耶穌遺體。比辣多異耶穌之已死也、乃召巴總、詢耶穌果已死否。既得百夫長報、遂准若瑟收其屍。若瑟既市布、乃解耶穌下、以布裹之、葬於巖石鑿成之墓穴、復移石、掩其墓門。瑪達蘭之瑪麗與若西之母瑪利亞、均審視其所葬之地。

惟無人敢公然論之、以畏猶太人故。

然官紳中亦頗有信耶穌者、惟礙於法利塞人、故不敢公然認之、恐被逐於會堂也。

父母之作此語、以懾於猶太人耳。蓋猶太人時已有成議、有敢認耶穌為基督者、必開除其教籍；
