It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath( and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.

It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people,“ Look, here is your king!”

And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached,

“ If someone has committed a crime worthy of death and is executed and hung on a tree,the body must not remain hanging from the tree overnight. You must bury the body that same day, for anyone who is hung is cursed in the sight of God. In this way, you will prevent the defilement of the land the Lord your God is giving you as your special possession.

It will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. You must also offer one quart of wine as a liquid offering.Do not eat any bread or roasted grain or fresh kernels on that day until you bring this offering to your God. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.“ From the day after the Sabbath— the day you bring the bundle of grain to be lifted up as a special offering— count off seven full weeks.Keep counting until the day after the seventh Sabbath, fifty days later. Then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.

On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food.

Yes, you eat my people’s flesh, strip off their skin, and break their bones. You chop them up like meat for the cooking pot.

The next day, on the Sabbath, the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate.
