由是彼拉多思何以釋之、猶太人呼曰、爾釋斯人、非忠於該撒、凡擅謂為王者、叛該撒也、

是後、彼拉多欲釋之、猶太人呼曰、自謂王者叛該撒若釋此人、則不臣該撒、○

此後比辣多更圖釋之；詎猶太人疾呼曰：『爾釋此人、則不得為凱撒友矣！凡自稱為王者、即與凱撒為敵者也。』

What have you done?”“ My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus.“ If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

Several days later, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and listened to him on the subject of faith in Christ Jesus.Now as he spoke about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix became afraid and replied,“ Leave for now, but when I have an opportunity I’ll call for you.”At the same time he was also hoping that Paul would offer him money. So he sent for him quite often and conversed with him.After two years had passed, Porcius Festus succeeded Felix, and because Felix wanted to do the Jews a favor, he left Paul in prison.

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered him,“ You say so.”Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no grounds for charging this man.”But they kept insisting,“ He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here.”

When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting,“ These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,and Jason has welcomed them. They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king— Jesus.”

When Herod heard of it, he said,“ John, the one I beheaded, has been raised!”For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.John had been telling Herod,“ It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.An opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”He promised her with an oath:“ Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What should I ask for?”“ John the Baptist’s head,” she said.At once she hurried to the king and said,“ I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter immediately.”Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her.
