由是彼拉多思何以釋之、猶太人呼曰、爾釋斯人、非忠於該撒、凡擅謂為王者、叛該撒也、

是後、彼拉多欲釋之、猶太人呼曰、自謂王者叛該撒若釋此人、則不臣該撒、○

此後比辣多更圖釋之；詎猶太人疾呼曰：『爾釋此人、則不得為凱撒友矣！凡自稱為王者、即與凱撒為敵者也。』

As a result of this, Pilate made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying,“ If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!”

From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying,“ If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

From that moment Pilate made every effort to release Him. But the Jews shouted,“ If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

彼拉多又進了官邸，把耶穌叫來，問他說：“你是猶太人的王嗎？”耶穌回答：“這話是你自己說的，還是別人對你說到我的呢？”彼拉多說：“難道我是猶太人嗎？你本國的人和祭司長把你交給我，你究竟作了甚麼事？”耶穌回答：“我的國不屬於這世界；如果我的國屬於這世界，我的臣僕就要作戰，使我不至被交給猶太人。不過，我的國不是這世上的。”

過了幾天，腓力斯和他的猶太妻子土西拉一同來到，他又傳見保羅，聽他談論在耶穌基督裡的信仰。保羅講到公義、自制和將來的審判的時候，腓力斯就害怕起來，說：“你先走吧，等我有空的時候再叫你來。”同時他也希望保羅送錢給他，所以又多次傳見他，和他談話。過了兩年，波求．非斯都接了腓力斯的任；腓力斯為要討好猶太人，就把保羅留在監裡。

控告他說：“我們查出這個人煽惑我們的同胞，阻止納稅給凱撒，並且自稱是基督，是王。”彼拉多問他：“你是猶太人的王嗎？”耶穌回答：“你已經說了（“你已經說了”或譯：“這是你說的”）。”彼拉多對祭司長和眾人說：“我在這人身上，查不出有甚麼罪。”但他們極力說：“他在猶太全地教導人，煽動群眾，從加利利直到這裡。”

搜索不到他們，就把耶孫和幾個弟兄，拉到地方長官那裡，喊叫著說：“這些擾亂天下的人，也到這裡來了，耶孫卻收留他們。這些人都違背凱撒的法令，說另外還有一個王耶穌。”

希律聽見就說：“是約翰，我砍了他的頭，他又活了！”原來希律曾親自派人去捉拿約翰，把他捆鎖在監裡。他這樣作，是為了他弟弟的妻子希羅底的緣故，因為他娶了希羅底為妻，而約翰曾對希律說：“你佔有你兄弟的妻子是不合理的。”於是希羅底懷恨在心，想要殺他，只是不能。因為希律懼怕約翰，知道他是公義聖潔的人，就保護他。希律聽了約翰的話，就非常困擾，卻仍然喜歡聽他。有一天，機會來了。在希律生日的那一天，他為大臣、千夫長和加利利的要人擺設了筵席。希羅底的女兒進來跳舞，使希律和在座的賓客都很開心。王就對女孩子說：“你無論想要甚麼，只管向我求，我一定給你！”並且對她再三起誓：“你無論向我求甚麼，就是我國的一半，我也一定給你！”於是她出去問母親：“我該求甚麼呢？”希羅底告訴她：“施洗的約翰的頭！”她急忙到王面前，向王要求說：“願王立刻把施洗的約翰的頭放在盤子上給我！”希律王非常憂愁，但是因為他的誓言和在座的賓客，就不願拒絕她。
