每當節期，總督照常例把羣眾所要的一個囚犯釋放給他們。那時他們有一個著名的囚犯叫巴拉巴耶穌。眾人聚集的時候，彼拉多就對他們說：『你們要我釋放哪一個給你們？是巴拉巴耶穌呢？還是這所謂基督的耶穌呢？』他原知道他們是因了嫉妒才把耶穌送交上來的。

祭司長和長老挑唆羣眾、求要巴拉巴而殺滅耶穌。總督應時問他們說：『這兩人中，你們要我釋放哪一個給你們？』他們說：『巴拉巴。』彼拉多對他們說：『那麼這所謂基督的耶穌、我要怎麼辦呢？』眾人說：『給釘十字架！』彼拉多說：『他作了甚麼惡事呢？』他們卻極力喊着說：『給釘十字架！』

每當節期，皇省長常把民眾所請求的一個囚犯釋放給他們。有一個人名叫巴拉巴、和作亂的人、就是當作亂時作過兇殺事的、一同被捆着。羣眾就上去，求皇省長照平常所作的給他們作。彼拉多回答他們說：『你們要我釋放猶太人的王給你們麼？』他原知道祭司長是因了嫉妒才把耶穌送交上來的。祭司長卻挑唆羣眾寧可要他釋放巴拉巴給他們。彼拉多又應時對他們說：『那麼你們所稱為猶太人的王的、我要怎麼辦呢？』他們又喊着說：『釘他十字架！』彼拉多對他們說：『他作了甚麼惡事呢？』他們卻極力地喊着：『釘他十字架！』

故此我要責打他，給釋放了。』
