眾應曰：『苟非惡類、必不解之爾前。』

“ He has committed crimes,” they replied.“ If he hadn’t, we would not have handed him over to you.”

They answered him,“ If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”

“ We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.

They answered him,“ If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

They answered and said to him,“ If this Man were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.”

They answered and said to him,“ If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evil- doer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.

They answered him,“ If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed Him over to you.”

They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

They answered him,“ If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”

“ We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said,“ and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

‘ The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’”

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting,“ If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.So the spies questioned him:“ Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their duplicity and said to them,“ Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.He said to them,“ Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The chief priests accused him of many things.

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd,“ I find no basis for a charge against this man.”But they insisted,“ He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”
