So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked,“ What is your charge against this man?”

So Pilate came out to them and asked,“ What charges are you bringing against this man?”

So Pilate went outside to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this man?”

Therefore Pilate came out to them and* said,“ What accusation are you bringing against this Man?”

Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?

Then Pilate came out to them and said,“ What charge do you bring against this man?”

“ Why?” Pilate demanded.“ What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder,“ Crucify him!”

Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied,“ You have said it.”Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,and Pilate asked him,“ Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.

They began to state their case:“ This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied,“ You have said it.”

Then I took him to their high council to try to learn the basis of the accusations against him.I soon discovered the charge was something regarding their religious law— certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately sent him on to you. I have told his accusers to bring their charges before you.”

Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor.“ Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him. Jesus replied,“ You have said it.”But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.“ Don’t you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?” Pilate demanded.But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.

I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people without a trial. They must be given an opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.
