So Pilate came outside to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this man?”

So Pilate came out to them and asked,“ What charges are you bringing against this man?”

So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked,“ What is your charge against this man?”

He asked,“ Why? What wrong has he done?” But they shouted more insistently,“ Crucify him!”

So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied,“ You say so.”Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.So Pilate asked him again,“ Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!”But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king.”So Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied,“ You say so.”

Since I wanted to know what charge they were accusing him of, I brought him down to their council.I found he was accused with reference to controversial questions about their law, but no charge against him deserved death or imprisonment.When I was informed there would be a plot against this man, I sent him to you at once, also ordering his accusers to state their charges against him before you.

Then Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said,“ You say so.”But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not respond.Then Pilate said to him,“ Don’t you hear how many charges they are bringing against you?”But he did not answer even one accusation, so that the governor was quite amazed.

I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to hand over anyone before the accused had met his accusers face to face and had been given an opportunity to make a defense against the accusation.
