Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence.( Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor’s residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.

They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him,“ Are you the King of the Jews?”

He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus,“ Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him.

“ You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

And he said to them,“ You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.

And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.And Pilate asked him,“ Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him,“ You have said so.”And the chief priests accused him of many things.And Pilate again asked him,“ Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in the power of their hand.

“ I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them.Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen.

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Give ear to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah!“ What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats.“ When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts?Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews,“ Behold your King!”

“ Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail.Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known,and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say,‘ We are delivered!’— only to go on doing all these abominations?Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord.

And you shall offer the Passover sacrifice to the Lord your God, from the flock or the herd, at the place that the Lord will choose, to make his name dwell there.

Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.

When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,saying,“ I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said,“ What is that to us? See to it yourself.”And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said,“ It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying,“ And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said,

“ In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall celebrate the Feast of the Passover, and for seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace( that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.

No disaster shall come upon us.”Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.

And his officials contributed willingly to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the chief officers of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings 2,600 Passover lambs and 300 bulls.Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the chiefs of the Levites, gave to the Levites for the Passover offerings 5,000 lambs and young goats and 500 bulls.When the service had been prepared for, the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command.And they slaughtered the Passover lamb, and the priests threw the blood that they received from them while the Levites flayed the sacrifices.And they set aside the burnt offerings that they might distribute them according to the groupings of the fathers’ houses of the lay people, to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the Book of Moses. And so they did with the bulls.And they roasted the Passover lamb with fire according to the rule; and they boiled the holy offerings in pots, in cauldrons, and in pans, and carried them quickly to all the lay people.And afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were offering the burnt offerings and the fat parts until night; so the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.

The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.

Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”And Pilate asked him,“ Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him,“ You have said so.”Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no guilt in this man.”But they were urgent, saying,“ He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”

And the people of Israel who were present kept the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days.No Passover like it had been kept in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel had kept such a Passover as was kept by Josiah, and the priests and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

And the people of Israel who were present at Jerusalem kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with great gladness, and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with all their might to the Lord.And Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites who showed good skill in the service of the Lord. So they ate the food of the festival for seven days, sacrificing peace offerings and giving thanks to the Lord, the God of their fathers.Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feast for another seven days. So they kept it for another seven days with gladness.For Hezekiah king of Judah gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep for offerings, and the princes gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. And the priests consecrated themselves in great numbers.
