Instantly Ananias the high priest commanded those close to Paul to slap him on the mouth.But Paul said to him,“ God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite! What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?”Those standing near Paul said to him,“ Do you dare to insult God’s high priest?”“ I’m sorry, brothers. I didn’t realize he was the high priest,” Paul replied,“ for the Scriptures say,‘ You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.’”

“ Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.

They despise me and won’t come near me, except to spit in my face.For God has cut my bowstring. He has humbled me, so they have thrown off all restraint.These outcasts oppose me to my face. They send me sprawling and lay traps in my path.

Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him,jeering,“ Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?”

The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.They blindfolded him and said,“ Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?”

Mobilize! Marshal your troops! The enemy is laying siege to Jerusalem. They will strike Israel’s leader in the face with a rod.

People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me.

So he arrested Jeremiah the prophet and had him whipped and put in stocks at the Benjamin Gate of the Lord’s Temple.

Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists.“ Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.

The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened. I have not rebelled or turned away.I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.
