I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.

“ Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.

But the people of Israel won’t listen to you any more than they listen to me! For the whole lot of them are hard hearted and stubborn.

For some of the Jews killed the prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted us, too. They fail to please God and work against all humanity

We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.

We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us.

Who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

Once again the people picked up stones to kill him.

“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One— the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.You deliberately disobeyed God’s law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.”The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen’s accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand.And he told them,“ Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!”Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at himand dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.As they stoned him, Stephen prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”He fell to his knees, shouting,“ Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.

So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.

I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!”

Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.

At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple.

Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother,“ This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.

When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus.

“ Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied,“ for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.

Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
