For we know that if our earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands.

“ The one who conquers I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never go out again. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God— the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God— and my new name.

I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.

Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return.But they now desire a better place— a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you,‘ Where I am going, you cannot come.’

But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

“ Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation.

The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant also will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.

For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Therefore, it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves to be purified with better sacrifices than these.For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with hands( only a model of the true one) but into heaven itself, so that he might now appear in the presence of God for us.He did not do this to offer himself many times, as the high priest enters the sanctuary yearly with the blood of another.Otherwise, he would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. But now he has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has set us free from our sins by his blood,

The Holy Spirit was making it clear that the way into the most holy place had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing.

so that no one will be shaken by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.In fact, when we were with you, we told you in advance that we were going to experience affliction, and as you know, it happened.

“ If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters— yes, and even his own life— he cannot be my disciple.Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.“ For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to ridicule him,saying,‘ This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’“ Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.

“ To the one who conquers I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Therefore, we ourselves boast about you among God’s churches— about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that you are enduring.It is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering,since it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict youand to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us. This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels,when he takes vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious strengthon that day when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed.

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,arrayed with God’s glory. Her radiance was like a precious jewel, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.The city had a massive high wall, with twelve gates. Twelve angels were at the gates; the names of the twelve tribes of Israel’s sons were inscribed on the gates.There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.The city wall had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb were on the foundations.The one who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.The city is laid out in a square; its length and width are the same. He measured the city with the rod at 12,000 stadia. Its length, width, and height are equal.Then he measured its wall, 144 cubits according to human measurement, which the angel used.The building material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold clear as glass.The foundations of the city wall were adorned with every kind of jewel: the first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.The twelve gates are twelve pearls; each individual gate was made of a single pearl. The main street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass.I did not see a temple in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.Its gates will never close by day because it will never be night there.They will bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.Nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those written in the Lamb’s book of life.
