Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;

At the same time that Jesus did those signs, many of the Jewish leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees, they would not openly admit they believed. They were afraid they would be thrown out of the synagogue.

惟無人敢公然論之、以畏猶太人故。

父母之作此語、以懾於猶太人耳。蓋猶太人時已有成議、有敢認耶穌為基督者、必開除其教籍；

凡認我於人前者、我亦認之於天父之前、

暮夜來謁耶穌曰：『夫子吾人深知子之來教誨也、乃奉天主之聖命、蓋子所行之靈蹟、苟非天主所輔佑、其孰能行之？』

然則爾將何以辨識天主之聖神乎？曰：凡承認耶穌基督確曾降世為人者、皆受天主之靈感者也。

為弔唁瑪麗而來之猶太人、既睹耶穌所行、多信奉之；

蓋因彼之故、猶太人多有脫離司祭而信奉耶穌者焉。

眾曰：『汝以負罪而生之身、乃欲予吾儕以教訓耶？』遂相與擯而出之。

夫薦紳先生、及法利塞人有信之者乎？惟彼眾庶、昧於律法、其亦可詛也已！』尼閣德睦即暮夜晉謁耶穌者、當時亦在其間、乃謂之曰：『未先聽訟、一究其所行、吾法豈能遽加以罪乎？』

若為人子故、不容於世俗、既被人棄絕、更受人凌辱、乃至將爾名、視之如荼毒、爾乃真福人、即日當歡躍；

宗徒既離公會、心竊自喜、竟蒙特寵、得為聖名而受辱、何樂如之。

伯鐸祿時坐院外、有使女詣其前曰：『爾與彼加利利人耶穌夙為同夥。』伯鐸祿當眾否認曰：『吾不知爾所云。』既出、方及門、又一使女見之、語於眾曰：『此乃納匝勒人耶穌之同夥也。』伯鐸祿復否認、並誓曰：『予不識其人也。』無何、旁立者更進謂伯鐸祿曰：『爾確為彼黨、聽爾之方音、已可知之矣。』伯鐸祿且咒且誓曰：『吾實不識其人。』雞即鳴矣。方憶耶穌「雞猶未鳴、行見爾不認予者三」之言。伯鐸祿乃悄然而出、不禁涕淚滂沱。

予語爾凡認予於人前者、人子亦必認之於天主之眾天神前。

人將開除爾等教籍；屆時、殺爾者、且將自以為盡忠於天主矣！

蓋中心信之、所以成義；口角傳之、所以蒙恩也。

有亞利瑪大人若瑟者、私淑耶穌、以畏猶太人故、迄未敢公然事之；至是乃具稟比辣多、欲領耶穌遺體；比辣多既准、乃來收屍。

親愛之同道乎、爾等之受煆煉、所以玉汝於成、切勿大驚小怪、一若遭遇不測也者。應知此乃可喜之事。蓋爾等既得與基督共患難、則於彼光榮顯現之日、必得與之同樂、將不知手之舞之、足之蹈之矣。爾等若果因基督之名而受唾罵、福莫大焉！蓋誠能如此、則光榮大能之聖神、天主之聖神、以爾為安宅矣。兄弟慎毋以殺人竊盜、為非作惡、或捨己耘人而受苦也。若為服膺基督之教而受苦、則非惟不可引以為辱、且當以此名義、歸榮於天主也。

故凡承認耶穌為天主聖子者、天主實寓其心、而其人亦寓天主之懷中。
