and many people came to him. They said,“ Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.”

And many followed him.“ John didn’t perform miraculous signs,” they remarked to one another,“ but everything he said about this man has come true.”

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,“ Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!This is he of whom I said,‘ After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’

And they came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness— look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”John answered,“ A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.You yourselves bear me witness, that I said,‘ I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.He must increase, but I must decrease.”He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.This is he of whom it is written,“‘ Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”( When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them.And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

and they found him and said to him,“ Everyone is looking for you.”

In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first,“ Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

and he said to his servants,“ This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”
