And so they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” And he* said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”

他們又問：“那麼你是誰？是以利亞嗎？”他說：“我不是。”“是那位先知嗎？”他回答：“不是。”

他們又詰問他說：『那麼、是甚麼呢？你是以利亞麼？』他說：『我不是。』『你是那位神言人麼？』他回答說：『不是。』

他們又問：「那麼你是誰呢？是以利亞嗎？」他說：「我不是。」「是那位先知嗎？」他回答：「不是。」

曰、然則爾為以利亞乎、曰非也、爾為彼先知乎、曰否、

曰、爾為誰、以利亞乎、曰、否、曰、抑當來之先知乎、曰、否、

又問曰、爾為誰、以利亞乎、曰、否、曰、抑為彼先知乎、曰、否、

曰：『然則爾為伊理藹乎？』曰：『非也。』曰：『子殆先知乎？』曰：『否。』

They asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” He answered,“ No.”

They asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?” they asked.“ No,” he answered.

And they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”

“ Well then, who are you?” they asked.“ Are you Elijah?”“ No,” he replied.“ Are you the Prophet we are expecting?”“ No.”

“ What then?” they asked him.“ Are you Elijah?”“ I am not,” he said.“ Are you the Prophet?”“ No,” he answered.

And they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

“ What then?” they asked him.“ Are you Elijah?”“ I am not,” he said.“ Are you the Prophet?”“ No,” he answered.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

So they asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not!”“ Are you the Prophet?” He answered,“ No!”

They asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the prophet?” He answered,“ No.”

“ Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.

And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.

“ The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen; to him you shall listen.This is in accordance with everything that you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying,‘ Do not let me hear the voice of the Lord my God again, and do not let me see this great fire anymore, or I will die!’And the Lord said to me,‘ They have spoken well.I will raise up for them a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them everything that I command him.

And they said,“ Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.”

They asked him, and said to him,“ Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

And His disciples asked Him,“ Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”And He answered and said,“ Elijah is coming and will restore all things;but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying,“ This truly is the Prophet.”

And it is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.This is the one about whom it is written:‘ Behold, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
