John was a witness about the Word. John cried out and said,“ This was the one I was talking about. I said,‘ He who comes after me is more important than I am. He is more important because he existed before I was born.’ ”

John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds,“ This is the one I was talking about when I said,‘ Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,“ Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!This is he of whom I said,‘ After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”And John bore witness:“ I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me,‘ He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

And they came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness— look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”John answered,“ A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.You yourselves bear me witness, that I said,‘ I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.He must increase, but I must decrease.”He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God.

And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Jesus said to them,“ Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

And he preached, saying,“ After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

John answered them all, saying,“ I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

saying,“ Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

“ The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying,“ Fear not, I am the first and the last,and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

“ And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write:‘ The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.

He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.John would have prevented him, saying,“ I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”But Jesus answered him,“ Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;and behold, a voice from heaven said,“ This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
