My people, put on the clothes of sadness. Roll among the ashes. Mourn with bitter weeping just as you would mourn for an only son. The one who is going to destroy us will come suddenly.

Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

Oh, my people, dress yourselves in burlap and sit among the ashes. Mourn and weep bitterly, as for the loss of an only son. For suddenly the destroying armies will be upon you!

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

O daughter of my people, gird[ thee] with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning,[ as for] an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.

So I said,“ Oh, my dear people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now that destructive army will come against us.”

Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

“ I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on David’s family line. I will also send it on those who live in Jerusalem. They will look to me. I am the one they have pierced. They will mourn over me as someone mourns over an only child who has died. They will be full of sorrow over me. Their sorrow will be just like someone’s sorrow over an oldest son.

So put on the clothes of sadness. Mourn and weep over what has happened. The Lord hasn’t turned his great anger away from us.

They will raise their voices. They will cry bitterly over you. They will sprinkle dust on their heads. They will roll in ashes.They will shave their heads because of you. And they will put on the clothes of sadness. They will weep over you. Their spirits will be greatly troubled. They will be very sad.

With their own hands, loving mothers have had to cook even their own children. They ate their children when my people were destroyed.

My people have been punished more than Sodom was. It was destroyed in a moment. No one offered it a helping hand.

Many will come to destroy it. They will gather on the bare hilltops in the desert. I will use them as my sword to destroy my people. They will kill them from one end of the land to the other. No one will be safe.

If you don’t listen, I will weep in secret. Because you are so proud, I will weep bitterly. Tears will flow from my eyes. The Lord’ s flock will be taken away as prisoners.

I’ve cried so much I can’t see very well. I’m suffering deep down inside. My heart is broken because my people are destroyed. Children and babies are fainting in the streets of the city.

“ Jeremiah, give them this message. Tell them,“‘ Let tears flow from my eyes. Let them pour out night and day. Never let them stop. The people of my own nation have suffered a terrible wound. They have been crushed.

My people are crushed, so I am crushed. I mourn, and I am filled with horror.Isn’t there any healing lotion in Gilead? Isn’t there a doctor there? Then why doesn’t someone heal the wounds of my people?I wish my head were a spring of water! I wish my eyes were a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for my people who have been killed.

At that time those the Lord kills will be lying around everywhere. They will be found from one end of the earth to the other. No one will mourn for them. Their dead bodies will not be gathered up or buried. Instead, they will be like human waste lying there on the ground.Weep and cry, you shepherds. Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. Your time to be killed has come. You will fall like the best of the rams.

One trouble follows another. The whole land is destroyed. In an instant my tents are gone. My home disappears in a moment.

The Lord who rules over all called out to you at that time. The Lord told you to weep and cry. He told you to tear your hair out. And he told you to put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad.

They bandage the wounds of my people as if they were not very deep.‘ Peace, peace,’ they say. But there isn’t any peace.

Those sins are like cracks in a high wall. They get bigger and bigger. Suddenly the wall breaks apart. Then it quickly falls down.

Even wild dogs nurse their young pups. But my people are as mean as ostriches in the desert.

I will turn your holy feasts into times for mourning. I will turn all your songs into weeping. You will have to wear the clothing of sadness. You will shave your heads. I will make you mourn as if your only son had died. The end of that time will be like a bitter day.”

You rich people, listen to me. Cry and weep, because you will soon be suffering.

“ That’s why I am weeping. Tears are flowing from my eyes. No one is near to comfort me. No one can heal my spirit. My children don’t have anything. My enemies are much too strong for me.”

Streams of tears flow from my eyes. That’s because my people are destroyed.

I will weep and mourn because Samaria will be destroyed. I’ll walk around barefoot and naked. I’ll bark like a wild dog. I’ll hoot like an owl.Samaria’s plague can’t be healed. The plague has spread to Judah. It has spread right up to the gate of my people. It has spread to Jerusalem itself.Don’t tell the people of Gath about it. Don’t let them see you weep. People in Beth Ophrah, roll in the dust.

I will increase the number of their widows. There will be more of them than the grains of sand on the seashore. At noon I will bring a destroyer against the mothers of the young men among my people. All at once I will bring down on them great suffering and terror.

So I said,“ Leave me alone. Let me weep bitter tears. Don’t try to comfort me. My people have been destroyed.”

Jerusalem weeps bitterly at night. Tears run down her cheeks. None of her friends comforts her. All those who were going to help her have turned against her. They have become her enemies.

At that time the people of Judah and Jerusalem will be warned. They will be told,“ A hot and dry wind is coming, my people. It is blowing toward you from the bare hilltops in the desert. But it does not separate straw from grain.

Listen to the cries of my people from a land far away. They cry out,“ Isn’t the Lord in Zion? Isn’t its King there anymore?” The Lord says,“ Why have they made me so angry by worshiping their wooden gods? Why have they made me angry with their worthless statues of gods from other lands?”

So tremble, you contented women. Tremble with fear, you who feel so secure. Take off your fine clothes. Wrap yourselves in rags.

The Lord rules over all. He says,“ Here is something I want you to think about. Send for the women who mourn for the dead. Send for the most skilled among them.”Let them come quickly and weep for us. Let them cry until tears flow from our eyes. Let them weep until water pours out of our eyes.People are heard weeping in Zion. They are saying,“ We are destroyed! We are filled with shame! We must leave our land. Our houses have been torn down.”You women, hear the Lord’ s message. Listen to what he’s saying. Teach your daughters how to mourn for the dead. Teach one another a song of sadness.Death has climbed in through our windows. It has entered our forts. Death has removed the children from the streets. It has taken the young men out of the market.Say,“ The Lord announces,“‘ Dead bodies will be like human waste lying in the open fields. They will lie there like grain that is cut down at harvest time. No one will gather them up.’ ”

He approached the town gate. Just then, a dead person was being carried out. He was the only son of his mother. She was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her.

I will cry and mourn over the mountains. I will sing a song of sadness about the desert grasslands. They are dry and empty. No one travels through them. The mooing of cattle isn’t heard there. The birds have flown away. All the animals are gone.

All those who escape and are left alive will run to the mountains. They will sound like doves of the valley when they cry over their sins.“‘ Their hands will be powerless to help them. They will wet themselves.They will put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They will put on terror as if it were their clothes. Every face will be covered with shame. Every head will be shaved.

Be full of sorrow. Cry and weep. Change your laughter to mourning. Change your joy to sadness.
