We have heard reports about them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labor.

We have heard reports about them. And our hands can’t help us. We are suffering greatly. It’s like the pain of a woman having a baby.

We have heard the report of it; our hands fall helpless; anguish has taken hold of us, pain as of a woman in labor.

We have heard reports about the enemy, and we wring our hands in fright. Pangs of anguish have gripped us, like those of a woman in labor.

In fact, I hear a cry like that of a woman in labor, a cry of anguish like that of a woman giving birth to her first baby. It is the cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath, reaching out for help, saying,“ I am done in! My life is ebbing away before these murderers!”

The people of Damascus will lose heart and turn to flee. Panic will grip them. Pain and anguish will seize them like a woman in labor.

The king of Babylon will become paralyzed with fear when he hears news of their coming. Anguish will grip him, agony like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.

I said,“ Oh, the feeling in the pit of my stomach! I writhe in anguish. Oh, the pain in my heart! My heart pounds within me. I cannot keep silent. For I hear the sound of the trumpet; the sound of the battle cry pierces my soul!I see one destruction after another taking place, so that the whole land lies in ruins. I see our tents suddenly destroyed, their curtains torn down in a mere instant.“ How long must I see the enemy’s battle flags and hear the military signals of their bugles?”

What will you say when the LORD appoints as rulers over you those allies that you, yourself, had actually prepared as such? Then anguish and agony will grip you like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.

Whenever it sweeps by, it will overtake you; indeed, every morning it will sweep by, it will come through during the day and the night.” When this announcement is understood, it will cause nothing but terror.

Ask yourselves this and consider it carefully: Have you ever seen a man give birth to a baby? Why then do I see all these strong men grabbing their stomachs in pain like a woman giving birth? And why do their faces turn so deathly pale?

For this reason my stomach churns; cramps overwhelm me like the contractions of a woman in labor. I am disturbed by what I hear, horrified by what I see.

I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us.

You may feel as secure as a bird nesting in the cedars of Lebanon. But oh how you will groan when the pains of judgment come on you. They will be like those of a woman giving birth to a baby.

Now when they are saying,“ There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape.

“ And you, son of man, groan with an aching heart and bitterness; groan before their eyes.When they ask you,‘ Why are you groaning?’ you will reply,‘ Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ Pay attention– it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign LORD.”

Raise a signal flag that tells people to go to Zion. Run for safety! Do not delay! For I am about to bring disaster out of the north. It will bring great destruction.Like a lion that has come up from its lair the one who destroys nations has set out from his home base. He is coming out to lay your land waste. Your cities will become ruins and lie uninhabited.So put on sackcloth! Mourn and wail, saying,‘ The fierce anger of the LORD has not turned away from us!’”“ When this happens,” says the LORD,“ the king and his officials will lose their courage. The priests will be struck with horror, and the prophets will be speechless in astonishment.”

Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth.

when what you dread comes like a whirlwind, and disaster strikes you like a devastating storm, when distressing trouble comes on you.Then they will call to me, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.

Jerusalem, why are you now shouting so loudly? Has your king disappeared? Has your wise leader been destroyed? Is this why pain grips you as if you were a woman in labor?Twist and strain, Daughter Zion, as if you were in labor! For you will leave the city and live in the open field. You will go to Babylon, but there you will be rescued. There the LORD will deliver you from the power of your enemies.
