Everyone wants to get richer and richer, from the least important of them to the most important. Prophets and priests alike try to fool everyone they can.

“ For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.

“ From the least to the greatest, their lives are ruled by greed. From prophets to priests, they are all frauds.

For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is making profit dishonestly. From prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.

“ For from the least of them to the greatest of them, Everyone is greedy for gain, And from the prophet to the priest Everyone deals falsely.

“ Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, Everyone is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even to the priest, Everyone deals falsely.

For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is making profit dishonestly. From prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.

“ That is because, from the least important to the most important of them, all of them are greedy for dishonest gain. Prophets and priests alike, all of them practice deceit.

“ Both prophet and priest are godless; even in my temple I find their wickedness,” declares the Lord.

Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”

I was enraged by their sinful greed; I punished them, and hid my face in anger, yet they kept on in their willful ways.

“ But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion.”

The prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

If I go into the country, I see those slain by the sword; if I go into the city, I see the ravages of famine. Both prophet and priest have gone to a land they know not.’”

This is what the Lord says:“ As for the prophets who lead my people astray, they proclaim‘ peace’ if they have something to eat, but prepare to wage war against anyone who refuses to feed them.

There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her.Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain.Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says’— when the Lord has not spoken.

you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones;who eat my people’s flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?”

Her officials within her are roaring lions; her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning.Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law.

Come, all you beasts of the field, come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, they seek their own gain.“ Come,” each one cries,“ let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better.”

The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.

Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.

The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done— they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem.

And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.

The priests did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.

With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed— an accursed brood!They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.

not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

“ As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the people of Israel are disgraced— they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets.

And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets:“ I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.”

The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord.But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said,“ You must die!

In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.
