To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.

Who can I speak to? Who can I warn? Who will even listen to me? Their ears are closed so they can’t hear. The Lord’ s message displeases them. They don’t take any delight in it.

To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it.

To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the Lord. They don’t want to listen at all.

To whom shall I speak and give warning, That they may hear? Behold, their ears are closed And they cannot listen. Behold, the word of the Lord has become for them a rebuke; They take no delight in it.

I answered,“ Who would listen if I spoke to them and warned them? Their ears are so closed that they cannot hear! Indeed, what the LORD says is offensive to them. They do not like it at all.

To whom should I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can’t listen. Behold, Yahweh’s word has become a reproach to them. They have no delight in it.

“ You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.

However, my people wouldn’t listen to me or pay attention but became obstinate; they did more evil than their ancestors.

But Moses said in the LORD’s presence,“ If the Israelites will not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am such a poor speaker?”

Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

I long for your salvation, LORD, and your instruction is my delight.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying,“ Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,

But if you warn a wicked person to turn from his way and he doesn’t turn from it, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.

Who is he trying to teach? Who is he trying to instruct? Infants just weaned from milk? Babies removed from the breast?“ Law after law, law after law, line after line, line after line, a little here, a little there.”For he will speak to this people with stammering speech and in a foreign language.He had said to them,“ This is the place of rest; let the weary rest; this is the place of repose.” But they would not listen.The word of the LORD will come to them:“ Law after law, law after law, line after line, line after line, a little here, a little there,” so they go stumbling backward, to be broken, trapped, and captured.

But the LORD, the God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of his messengers, sending them time and time again, for he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.

One of the experts in the law answered him,“ Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

For in my inner self I delight in God’s law,

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.

I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

I delight to do your will, my God, and your instruction is deep within me.”

Then I thought: They are just the poor; they have been foolish. For they don’t understand the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God. However, these also had broken the yoke and torn off the chains.

your decrees are my delight and my counselors.

For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim,“ Violence and destruction!” so the word of the LORD has become my constant disgrace and derision.I say,“ I won’t mention him or speak any longer in his name.” But his message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones. Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.

Then the scribes and the chief priests looked for a way to get their hands on him that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.

When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

If I say to the wicked person,‘ You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him— you don’t speak out to warn him about his wicked way in order to save his life— that wicked person will die for his iniquity. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood.But if you warn a wicked person and he does not turn from his wickedness or his wicked way, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.Now if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts unjustly, and I put a stumbling block in front of him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die because of his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood.But if you warn the righteous person that he should not sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he listened to your warning, and you will have rescued yourself.”

And he replied: Go! Say to these people: Keep listening, but do not understand; keep looking, but do not perceive.Make the minds of these people dull; deafen their ears and blind their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their minds, turn back, and be healed.

He knelt down and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” And after saying this, he fell asleep.

Circumcise yourselves to the LORD; remove the foreskin of your hearts, men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. Otherwise, my wrath will break out like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it because of your evil deeds.

Instead, his delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.

May your compassion come to me so that I may live, for your instruction is my delight.

The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it— that its works are evil.

Their hearts are hard and insensitive, but I delight in your instruction.

Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him,“ We aren’t blind too, are we?”

Who among you will hear this? Let him listen and obey in the future.Who gave Jacob to the robber, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD? Have we not sinned against him? They were not willing to walk in his ways, and they would not listen to his instruction.So he poured out his furious anger and the power of war on Jacob. It surrounded him with fire, but he did not know it; it burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.
