當夜，迦勒底王伯沙撒被殺。瑪代人大流士六十二歲時奪取了王權。

伯沙撒王盛宴款待一千大臣，與他們一同飲酒。王暢飲的時候，命人將先王尼布甲尼撒從耶路撒冷聖殿中擄來的金銀器皿拿來，供他與大臣、王后和妃嬪用來飲酒。於是，他們把從耶路撒冷上帝殿中擄來的金器拿來，王與大臣、王后和妃嬪便用這些器皿飲酒。他們一邊飲酒，一邊頌讚金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所造的神明。

於是，耶和華的天使到亞述營中殺了十八萬五千人。人們清早起來，發現到處是屍體。

我心慌意亂，驚懼不堪，我期盼的黃昏卻令我恐懼。他們擺設宴席，坐在地毯上又吃又喝。突然有人大喊：「官長啊，起來擦亮盾牌，備戰吧！」

她怎樣待人，你們也要怎樣待她，要按她所做的加倍地報應她，用她調酒的杯加倍地調給她喝。她過去怎樣自炫自耀、奢華荒淫，現在也要讓她怎樣痛苦哀傷。因為她心裡說，『我貴為女王，不是寡婦，絕不會經歷哀傷。』

你們像糾結的荊棘，又像酩酊大醉的人，要如乾稭被火燒盡。

「那些曾與她通姦享樂的君王目睹焚燒她的煙，必為她哭泣哀號。

「用酒灌醉鄰居以觀看他們祼體的人啊，你們有禍了！你們必飽受羞辱，毫無榮耀。你們喝吧，露出下體吧！耶和華右手中的杯將傳給你們，你們的榮耀將變成羞辱。你們以暴虐對待黎巴嫩，自己必被暴虐吞噬；你們毀滅野獸，自己必被恐怖籠罩。因為你們殺人流血，摧毀土地、城市和人民。
