“ We are disgraced, for we have been insulted and shame covers our faces, because foreigners have entered the holy places of the Lord’s house.”

The people of Judah reply,“ No one honors us anymore. People make fun of us. Our faces are covered with shame. People from other lands have entered the holy places of the Lord’ s house.”

‘ We are put to shame, for we have heard reproach; dishonor has covered our face, for foreigners have come into the holy places of the Lord’s house.’

“ We are ashamed,” the people say.“ We are insulted and disgraced because the Lord’s Temple has been defiled by foreigners.”

We are ashamed because we have heard reproach. Shame has covered our faces, For strangers have come into the sanctuaries of the LORD’s house.

The adversary has seized all her precious belongings. She has even seen the nations enter her sanctuary— those you had forbidden to enter your assembly.

Make your way to the perpetual ruins, to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary.Your adversaries roared in the meeting place where you met with us. They set up their emblems as signs.It was like men in a thicket of trees, wielding axes,then smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks.They set your sanctuary on fire; they utterly desecrated the dwelling place of your name.

You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face,because of the taunts of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger.

LORD, look and consider to whom you have done this. Should women eat their own children, the infants they have nurtured? Should priests and prophets be killed in the Lord’s sanctuary?

LORD, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace!

After my return, I felt regret; After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”

Remember this: the enemy has mocked the LORD, and a foolish people has insulted your name.Do not give to beasts the life of your dove; do not forget the lives of your poor people forever.Consider the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of violence.Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name.

His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the regular sacrifice and set up the abomination of desolation.

Show us favor, LORD, show us favor, for we’ve had more than enough contempt.We’ve had more than enough scorn from the arrogant and contempt from the proud.

Their nobles send their servants for water. They go to the cisterns; they find no water; their containers return empty. They are ashamed and humiliated; they cover their heads.

Say to the house of Israel,‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your heart. Also, the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.

God, the nations have invaded your inheritance, desecrated your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins.

I will hand these things over to foreigners as plunder and to the wicked of the earth as spoil, and they will profane them.I will turn my face from them as they profane my treasured place. Violent men will enter it and profane it.

After those sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the coming ruler will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come with a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.He will make a firm covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering. And the abomination of desolation will be on a wing of the temple until the decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.”

It acted arrogantly even against the Prince of the heavenly army; it revoked his regular sacrifice and overthrew the place of his sanctuary.In the rebellion, the army was given up, together with the regular sacrifice. The horn threw truth to the ground and was successful in what it did.Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the speaker,“ How long will the events of this vision last— the regular sacrifice, the rebellion that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and of the army to be trampled?”He said to me,“ For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be restored.”

Then I was given a measuring reed like a rod, with these words:“ Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count those who worship there.But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. Don’t measure it, because it is given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.

Then my enemy will see, and she will be covered with shame, the one who said to me,“ Where is the LORD your God?” My eyes will look at her in triumph; at that time she will be trampled like mud in the streets.

I will also make the fruit of the trees and the produce of the field plentiful, so that you will no longer experience reproach among the nations on account of famine.

All who pass by scornfully clap their hands at you. They hiss and shake their heads at Daughter Jerusalem: Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?All your enemies open their mouths against you. They hiss and gnash their teeth, saying,“ We have swallowed her up. This is the day we have waited for! We have lived to see it.”The LORD has done what he planned; he has accomplished his decree, which he ordained in days of old. He has demolished without compassion, letting the enemy gloat over you and exalting the horn of your adversaries.

Return, you faithless children. I will heal your unfaithfulness.“ Here we are, coming to you, for you are the LORD our God.Surely, falsehood comes from the hills, commotion from the mountains, but the salvation of Israel is only in the LORD our God.From the time of our youth the shameful one has consumed what our ancestors have worked for— their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.Let us lie down in our shame; let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our ancestors, from the time of our youth even to this day. We have not obeyed the LORD our God.”

By the rivers of Babylon— there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion.There we hung up our lyres on the poplar trees,for our captors there asked us for songs, and our tormentors, for rejoicing:“ Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”

He burned the LORD’s temple, the king’s palace, all the houses of Jerusalem; he burned down all the great houses.

They will put on sackcloth, and horror will overwhelm them. Shame will cover all their faces, and all their heads will be bald.

Pay back sevenfold to our neighbors the reproach they have hurled at you, Lord.

May my adversaries be disgraced and destroyed; may those who intend to harm me be covered with disgrace and humiliation.

Then he said to them,“ Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!” So they went out killing people in the city.
