“ A sword against the Babylonians!” declares the Lord—“ against those who live in Babylon and against her officials and wise men!

“ A sword is on the Chaldeans,” says Yahweh,“ and on the inhabitants of Babylon, on her princes, and on her wise men.

How long will you cry out,‘ Oh, sword of the LORD, how long will it be before you stop killing? Go back into your sheath! Stay there and rest!’

A sword will flash in their cities, it will destroy the bars of their city gates, and will devour them in their fortresses.

And in that very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, was killed.

The king called out loudly to summon the astrologers, wise men, and diviners. The king proclaimed to the wise men of Babylon that anyone who could read this inscription and disclose its interpretation would be clothed in purple and have a golden collar placed on his neck and be third ruler in the kingdom.So all the king’s wise men came in, but they were unable to read the writing or to make known its interpretation to the king.

“ I will make her officials and wise men drunk, along with her governors, leaders, and warriors. They will fall asleep forever and never wake up,” says the King whose name is the LORD who rules over all.

King Belshazzar prepared a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinking wine in front of them all.While under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar issued an order to bring in the gold and silver vessels– the ones that Nebuchadnezzar his father had confiscated from the temple in Jerusalem– so that the king and his nobles, together with his wives and his concubines, could drink from them.

So her young men will fall in her city squares. All her soldiers will be destroyed at that time,” says the LORD.

I have stirred up one out of the north and he advances, one from the eastern horizon who prays in my name. He steps on rulers as if they were clay, like a potter treading the clay.

Everyone should revere you, O King of all nations, because you deserve to be revered. For there is no one like you among any of the wise people of the nations nor among any of their kings.

Your wise men will be put to shame. They will be dumbfounded and be brought to judgment. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what wisdom do they really have?

The word of the LORD came to me:

For the LORD judges all humanity with fire and his sword; the LORD will kill many.

The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; Pharaoh’s wise advisers give stupid advice. How dare you say to Pharaoh,“ I am one of the sages, one well-versed in the writings of the ancient kings?”But where, oh where, are your wise men? Let them tell you, let them find out what the LORD who commands armies has planned for Egypt.The officials of Zoan are fools, the officials of Memphis are misled; the rulers of her tribes lead Egypt astray.

Woe to the worthless shepherd who abandons the flock! May a sword fall on his arm and his right eye! May his arm wither completely away, and his right eye become completely blind!”

who frustrates the omens of the empty talkers and humiliates the omen readers, who overturns the counsel of the wise men and makes their advice seem foolish,

I will bring on you an avenging sword, a covenant vengeance. Although you will gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you and you will be given into enemy hands.

You are tired out from listening to so much advice. Let them take their stand– the ones who see omens in the sky, who gaze at the stars, who make monthly predictions– let them rescue you from the disaster that is about to overtake you!Look, they are like straw, which the fire burns up; they cannot rescue themselves from the heat of the flames. There are no coals to warm them, no firelight to enjoy.

Therefore I will again do an amazing thing for these people– an absolutely extraordinary deed. Wise men will have nothing to say, the sages will have no explanations.”

When their appetites are all stirred up, I will set out a banquet for them. I will make them drunk so that they will pass out, they will fall asleep forever, they will never wake up,” says the LORD.

Kill all her soldiers! Let them be slaughtered! They are doomed, for their day of reckoning has come, the time for them to be punished.”
