“ Among my people are the wicked who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch people.

“ Jeremiah, some of my people are evil. They hide and wait just as people hide to catch birds. They set traps for people.

For wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers lying in wait. They set a trap; they catch men.

for wicked men live among my people. They watch like hunters lying in wait. They set a trap; they catch men.

“ Indeed, there are wicked scoundrels among my people. They lie in wait like bird catchers hiding in ambush. They set deadly traps to catch people.

They may say,“ Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!

They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret.“ Who will ever notice?” they ask.

Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets.Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.

“ Son of man, are you ready to judge Jerusalem? Are you ready to judge this city of murderers? Publicly denounce her detestable sins,and give her this message from the Sovereign Lord: O city of murderers, doomed and damned— city of idols, filthy and foul—you are guilty because of the blood you have shed. You are defiled because of the idols you have made. Your day of destruction has come! You have reached the end of your years. I will make you an object of mockery throughout the world.O infamous city, filled with confusion, you will be mocked by people far and near.“ Every leader in Israel who lives within your walls is bent on murder.Fathers and mothers are treated with contempt. Foreigners are forced to pay for protection. Orphans and widows are wronged and oppressed among you.You despise my holy things and violate my Sabbath days of rest.People accuse others falsely and send them to their death. You are filled with idol worshipers and people who do obscene things.Men sleep with their fathers’ wives and force themselves on women who are menstruating.Within your walls live men who commit adultery with their neighbors’ wives, who defile their daughters in law, or who rape their own sisters.There are hired murderers, loan racketeers, and extortioners everywhere. They never even think of me and my commands, says the Sovereign Lord.

Let screaming be heard from their homes as warriors come suddenly upon them. For they have dug a pit for me and have hidden traps along my path.

“ Shout with the voice of a trumpet blast. Shout aloud! Don’t be timid. Tell my people Israel of their sins!

Are we only fish to be caught and killed? Are we only sea creatures that have no leader?Must we be strung up on their hooks and caught in their nets while they rejoice and celebrate?

If a bird sees a trap being set, it knows to stay away.But these people set an ambush for themselves; they are trying to get themselves killed.

“ My people are foolish and do not know me,” says the Lord.“ They are stupid children who have no understanding. They are clever enough at doing wrong, but they have no idea how to do right!”

His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon,“ Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”

Saul hurled his spear at David. But David dodged out of the way, and leaving the spear stuck in the wall, he fled and escaped into the night.Then Saul sent troops to watch David’s house. They were told to kill David when he came out the next morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him,“ If you don’t escape tonight, you will be dead by morning.”
