The LORD commanded the enemy,“ March through the vineyards of Israel and Judah and ruin them. But do not destroy them completely. Strip off their branches for these people do not belong to the LORD.

Go up among her vineyard terraces and destroy them, but do not finish them off. Prune away her shoots, for they do not belong to the LORD.

“ Go up on her walls and destroy, But do not make a complete end. Take away her branches, For they are not the LORD’s.

All this will happen because the LORD said,“ The whole land will be desolate; however, I will not completely destroy it.

The Babylonians burned down the royal palace, the temple of the LORD, and the people’s homes, and they tore down the wall of Jerusalem.

The king was furious! He sent his soldiers, and they put those murderers to death and set their city on fire.

He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy.He delivered his people over to the sword, and was angry with his chosen nation.

Stop putting your confidence in the false belief that says,“ We are safe! The temple of the LORD is here! The temple of the LORD is here! The temple of the LORD is here!”You must change the way you have been living and do what is right. You must treat one another fairly.Stop oppressing foreigners who live in your land, children who have lost their fathers, and women who have lost their husbands. Stop killing innocent people in this land. Stop paying allegiance to other gods. That will only bring about your ruin.If you stop doing these things, I will allow you to continue to live in this land which I gave to your ancestors as a lasting possession.“‘ But just look at you! You are putting your confidence in a false belief that will not deliver you.You steal. You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to other gods whom you have not previously known.Then you come and stand in my presence in this temple I have claimed as my own and say,“ We are safe!” You think you are so safe that you go on doing all those hateful sins!Do you think this temple I have claimed as my own is to be a hideout for robbers? You had better take note! I have seen for myself what you have done! says the LORD.So, go to the place in Shiloh where I allowed myself to be worshiped in the early days. See what I did to it because of the wicked things my people Israel did.

While I listened, he said to the others,“ Go through the city after him and strike people down; do no let your eye pity nor spare anyone!Old men, young men, young women, little children, and women– wipe them out! But do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary!” So they began with the elders who were at the front of the temple.He said to them,“ Defile the temple and fill the courtyards with corpses. Go!” So they went out and struck people down throughout the city.

For I, the LORD, affirm that I will be with you and will rescue you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you. But I will not completely destroy you. I will indeed discipline you, but only in due measure. I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished.”

“ Babylon, you are my war club, my weapon for battle. I used you to smash nations. I used you to destroy kingdoms.I used you to smash horses and their riders. I used you to smash chariots and their drivers.I used you to smash men and women. I used you to smash old men and young men. I used you to smash young men and young women.I used you to smash shepherds and their flocks. I used you to smash farmers and their teams of oxen. I used you to smash governors and leaders.”

Then the LORD said:“ Name him‘ Not My People’( Lo-Ammi), because you are not my people and I am not your God.”

He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered their young men in their temple. He did not spare young men or women, or even the old and aging. God handed everyone over to him.

Assyria, the club I use to vent my anger, is as good as dead, a cudgel with which I angrily punish.I sent him against a godless nation, I ordered him to attack the people with whom I was angry, to take plunder and to carry away loot, to trample them down like dirt in the streets.But he does not agree with this, his mind does not reason this way, for his goal is to destroy, and to eliminate many nations.

The LORD sent against him Babylonian, Syrian, Moabite, and Ammonite raiding bands; he sent them to destroy Judah, as he had warned he would do through his servants the prophets.Just as the LORD had announced, he rejected Judah because of all the sins which Manasseh had committed.Because he killed innocent people and stained Jerusalem with their blood, the LORD was unwilling to forgive them.

They will say,‘ Prepare to do battle against it! Come on! Let’s attack it at noon!’ But later they will say,‘ Oh, oh! Too bad! The day is almost over and the shadows of evening are getting long.So come on, let’s go ahead and attack it by night and destroy all its fortified buildings.’All of this is because the LORD who rules over all has said:‘ Cut down the trees around Jerusalem and build up a siege ramp against its walls. This is the city which is to be punished. Nothing but oppression happens in it.

This is a message about Babylon that God revealed to Isaiah son of Amoz:On a bare hill raise a signal flag, shout to them, wave your hand, so they might enter the gates of the princes!I have given orders to my chosen soldiers; I have summoned the warriors through whom I will vent my anger, my boasting, arrogant ones.There is a loud noise on the mountains– it sounds like a large army! There is great commotion among the kingdoms– nations are being assembled! The LORD who commands armies is mustering forces for battle.They come from a distant land, from the horizon. It is the LORD with his instruments of judgment, coming to destroy the whole earth.

So I, the LORD, affirm that I will send for all the peoples of the north and my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and all the nations that surround it. I will utterly destroy this land, its inhabitants, and all the nations that surround it and make them everlasting ruins. I will make them objects of horror and hissing scorn.

I, the LORD, tell you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servant, for I am with you. Though I completely destroy all the nations where I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will indeed discipline you but only in due measure. I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished.”

But I will let a small number of them survive the sword, famine, and pestilence, so that they can confess all their abominable practices to the nations where they go. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

Look, the sovereign LORD is watching the sinful nation, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. But I will not completely destroy the family of Jacob,” says the LORD.

Yet even then I will not completely destroy you,” says the LORD.

“ Or suppose I were to bring a sword against that land and say,‘ Let a sword pass through the land,’ and I were to kill both people and animals.
