Why do you boast of your valleys, boast of your valleys so fruitful? Unfaithful Daughter Ammon, you trust in your riches and say,‘ Who will attack me?’

Why do you brag about your great power? Your power is ebbing away, you rebellious people of Ammon, who trust in your riches and say,‘ Who would dare to attack us?’

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

I will personally fight against the people in Jerusalem, that mighty fortress— the people who boast,“ No one can touch us here. No one can break in here.”

This is what the Lord says:“ Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.

They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.

“ Return home, you wayward children,” says the Lord,“ for I am your master. I will bring you back to the land of Israel— one from this town and two from that family— from wherever you are scattered.

Don’t make your living by extortion or put your hope in stealing. And if your wealth increases, don’t make it the center of your life.

Because you have trusted in your wealth and skill, you will be taken captive. Your god Chemosh, with his priests and officials, will be hauled off to distant lands!

“ Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.”

With your wisdom and understanding you have amassed great wealth— gold and silver for your treasuries.Yes, your wisdom has made you very rich, and your riches have made you very proud.“ Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you think you are as wise as a god,I will now bring against you a foreign army, the terror of the nations. They will draw their swords against your marvelous wisdom and defile your splendor!

“ But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward.

The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.

But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,” says the Lord.“ If thieves came at night and robbed you( what a disaster awaits you!), they would not take everything. Those who harvest grapes always leave a few for the poor. But your enemies will wipe you out completely!

What sorrow awaits the proud city of Samaria— the glorious crown of the drunks of Israel. It sits at the head of a fertile valley, but its glorious beauty will fade like a flower. It is the pride of a people brought down by wine.For the Lord will send a mighty army against it. Like a mighty hailstorm and a torrential rain, they will burst upon it like a surging flood and smash it to the ground.The proud city of Samaria— the glorious crown of the drunks of Israel— will be trampled beneath its enemies’ feet.It sits at the head of a fertile valley, but its glorious beauty will fade like a flower. Whoever sees it will snatch it up, as an early fig is quickly picked and eaten.

Israel is stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. So should the Lord feed her like a lamb in a lush pasture?
