躲在乡村的犹大将领和士兵听说巴比伦王委任亚希甘的儿子基大利管理犹大的穷人，就是没有被掳到巴比伦的男女妇孺，便来到米斯巴见基大利。他们是尼探雅的儿子以实玛利、加利亚的儿子约哈难和约拿单、单户篾的儿子西莱雅、尼陀法人以斐的儿子们、玛迦人耶撒尼亚及他们的属下。

何沙雅的儿子亚撒利雅、加利亚的儿子约哈难和一些狂妄之徒对耶利米说：“你在撒谎！我们的上帝耶和华并没有派你来告诉我们不可去埃及住。是尼利亚的儿子巴录怂恿你反对我们，好叫我们落在迦勒底人手中，任由他们宰杀或掳到巴比伦。”于是，加利亚的儿子约哈难和众将领及民众都不听从耶和华让他们留在犹大的命令。加利亚的儿子约哈难和众将领率领民众下到埃及的答比匿。民众中有流亡到各国又返回犹大的余民和护卫长尼布撒拉旦留给沙番的孙子、亚希甘的儿子基大利管理的男女妇孺、公主以及耶利米先知和尼利亚的儿子巴录。他们没有听从耶和华的命令。

愿你的上帝耶和华指示我们该去哪里，该做什么。”

加利亚的儿子约哈难、何沙雅的儿子耶撒尼亚和其他将领及各阶层的民众前来，

尼探雅的儿子以实玛利和同来的十个人突然起来拔刀杀了巴比伦王委任管理犹大的沙番的孙子、亚希甘的儿子基大利，还杀了所有在米斯巴与基大利在一起的犹大人和那里的迦勒底士兵。

到了城中，以实玛利和部下便屠杀他们，弃尸于蓄水池中。
