There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles of Judah.

The king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah. He forced Zedekiah to watch it with his own eyes. He also killed all the nobles of Judah.

The officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the pieces of the calf—all these I will hand over to their enemies, to those who intend to take their life. Their corpses will become food for the birds of the sky and for the wild animals of the land.I will hand King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials over to their enemies, to those who intend to take their lives, to the king of Babylon’s army that is withdrawing.

Afterward— this is the LORD’s declaration— King Zedekiah of Judah, his officers, and the people— those in this city who survive the plague, the sword, and the famine— I will hand over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, to their enemies, yes, to those who intend to take their lives. He will put them to the sword; he won’t spare them or show pity or compassion.’

They slaughtered Zedekiah’s sons before his eyes. Finally, the king of Babylon blinded Zedekiah, bound him in bronze chains, and took him to Babylon.

You will be driven mad by what you see.

“ But as for the bad figs, so bad they are inedible, this is what the LORD says: In this way I will deal with King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem— those remaining in this land or living in the land of Egypt.I will make them an object of horror and a disaster to all the kingdoms of the earth, an example for disgrace, scorn, ridicule, and cursing, wherever I have banished them.I will send the sword, famine, and plague against them until they have perished from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.”

and went and sat at a distance, about a bowshot away, for she said,“ I can’t bear to watch the boy die!” While she sat at a distance, she wept loudly.

‘ Therefore, I will indeed gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am bringing on this place.’” Then they reported to the king.

For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the grief that would overwhelm my father.”

For how could I bear to see the disaster that would come on my people? How could I bear to see the destruction of my relatives?”

Their children will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted, and their wives raped.

‘ I will indeed gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am bringing on this place and on its inhabitants.’” Then they reported to the king.
