So the officials took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern of Malkijah, one of the royal princes, that was in the courtyard of the guardhouse. There was no water in the cistern, only mud. So when they lowered Jeremiah into the cistern with ropes he sank in the mud.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that[ was] in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon[ there was] no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

Then King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be committed to the courtyard of the guardhouse. He also ordered that a loaf of bread be given to him every day from the baker’s street until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah was kept in the courtyard of the guardhouse.

So Jeremiah was put in prison in a cell in the dungeon in Jonathan’s house. He was kept there for a long time.

Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.

Then they took him and threw him into the cistern.( Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.)

Rescue me from the mud! Don’t let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water!Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit devour me!

Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

All the women who are left in the royal palace of Judah will be led out to the officers of the king of Babylon. They will taunt you saying,‘ Your trusted friends misled you; they have gotten the best of you. Now that your feet are stuck in the mud, they have turned their backs on you.’

I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me.

He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing.

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done,Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.

He also ordered Jerahmeel, who was one of the royal princes, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. However, the LORD hid them.

They repay me evil for good, and hate for love.

For no good reason my enemies hunted me down like a bird.They shut me up in a pit and threw stones at me.The waters closed over my head; I thought I was about to die.ק( Qof)I have called on your name, O LORD, from the deepest pit.

So Ebed Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasure room in the palace. He got some worn-out clothes and old rags from there and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.Ebed Melech called down to Jeremiah,“ Put these rags and worn-out clothes under your armpits to pad the ropes. Jeremiah did as Ebed Melech instructed.

For you need endurance in order to do God’s will and so receive what is promised.
