撒母耳說：『我怎能去呢？掃羅聽見、必定殺害我的。』永恆主說：『你手裏可以牽着一隻母牛犢，就說：「我是為給永恆主獻祭來的。」你請耶西來赴祭筵，我就指示你所當行的：我對你說明甚麼人，你就為我膏立甚麼人好啦。』撒母耳便照永恆主所吩咐的話去行。他到了伯利恆，那城的長老都戰戰兢兢地迎接他，說：『你來平安麼？』他說：『平安；我是給永恆主獻祭來的；你們要潔淨自己為聖、來跟我赴祭筵。』撒母耳就叫耶西和他兒子們潔淨為聖，請他赴祭筵。

掃羅的叔叔說：『請將撒母耳向你們所說的話告訴我。』掃羅對他叔叔說：『他明明告訴我們母驢已經找着了。』至於撒母耳所說的君王國事、掃羅卻沒有告訴叔叔。
