他們就拿住耶利米，把他丟在王的兒子瑪基雅的井裏；那口井在護衛兵的院中。他們用繩子把耶利米縋下去，井裏沒有水，只有淤泥，耶利米就陷在淤泥中。在王宮裏的太監古實人以伯‧米勒，聽見他們把耶利米丟進井裏，那時王坐在便雅憫門前。以伯‧米勒從王宮裏出來，對王說：「主－我的王啊，這些人向耶利米先知一味地行惡，把他丟在井裏；他在那裏必因飢餓而死，因為城裏不再有糧食了。」

他們審問了我，有意要釋放我，因為在我身上並沒有該死的罪狀。但猶太人反對，我不得已只好上訴於凱撒，並不是有甚麼事要控告我本國的百姓。

但你們要確實知道，你們若把我處死，就使流無辜人血的罪歸給你們和這城，以及城裏的居民了；因為耶和華確實差遣我到你們這裏來，將這一切話傳到你們耳中。」

保羅的外甥聽見他們設下埋伏，就來到營樓裏告訴保羅。保羅請一個百夫長來，說：「你領這青年去見千夫長，他有事告訴他。」於是百夫長把他領去見千夫長，說：「被囚的保羅請我到他那裏，求我領這青年來見你；他有事告訴你。」千夫長就拉着他的手，走到一旁，私下問他：「你有甚麼事告訴我呢？」他說：「猶太人已經約定，要求你明天把保羅帶到議會去，假裝要詳細查問他的事。你切不要隨從他們，因為他們有四十多人埋伏，已經起誓，若不先殺掉保羅就不吃不喝。現在都預備好了，只等你的允准。」於是千夫長打發那青年走，囑咐他：「不要告訴人，你已將這些事報告我了。」

你就對他們說：『我在王面前懇求不要把我送回約拿單的房屋，免得我死在那裏。』」

保羅說：「我現在站在凱撒的審判臺前，這就是我應當受審的地方。我並沒有對猶太人做過甚麼不對的事，這也是你明明知道的。我若做了不對的事，犯了甚麼該死的罪，就是死我也不辭。他們所控告我的事若都不實，就沒有人能把我交給他們。我要向凱撒上訴。」
