公会中有一位名叫迦玛列的法利赛人，是个德高望重的律法教师。他站起来，叫人把使徒暂且押到外面，然后说：“以色列人啊，你们应当慎重处置这些人。不久前，有个名叫杜达的人起来自立山头，吸引了差不多四百个跟随者，但他被杀之后，那些跟随者就各奔东西，销声匿迹了。后来，又有个加利利人犹大在户口登记期间鼓动百姓跟随他造反。他被杀之后，那些跟随者也烟消云散了。所以，像现在这种情形，我劝大家还是不要管他们，随他们去吧。他们的计划和行为如果是出于人意，终必失败；但如果是出于上帝，你们不但无法阻止他们，恐怕反而是在抵挡上帝！”

他又说：“不要杀人流血，把他扔在这口井里吧，不要下手害他。”吕便想救约瑟，把他交回给父亲。

就下到王宫，进入书记的房间。房间内坐着所有官长，即书记以利沙玛、示玛雅的儿子第莱雅、亚革波的儿子以利拿单、沙番的儿子基玛利雅和哈拿尼雅的儿子西底迦等人。

约雅敬王便派亚革波的儿子以利拿单率随从去埃及捉拿他。

犹大对他的众弟兄说：“我们杀死弟弟、掩盖罪行有什么益处呢？不如把他卖给以实玛利人，不要下手害他，他毕竟是我们的弟弟，我们的骨肉啊！”其他弟兄都赞成他的意见。于是，那些米甸商人经过的时候，他们就把约瑟从井里拉上来，以二百二十克银子的价钱把他卖给了以实玛利人。这些商人把他带到埃及去了。

“我出卖了清白无辜的人，我犯罪了！”他们说：“那是你自己的事，跟我们有什么关系？”

彼拉多见再说也无济于事，反而会引起骚乱，于是拿了一盆水来，在众人面前洗手，说：“流这义人的血，罪不在我，你们自己负责。”众人都说：“流祂血的责任由我们和我们的子孙承担！”

耶和华说话了，你们要留心听，不可傲慢。趁着你们的上帝耶和华还未使黑暗来临，你们还未在漆黑的山上绊倒，要把荣耀归给祂。否则，祂必使你们期望的光明变为幽冥和黑暗。如果你们因为骄傲而不肯听，我会暗自哭泣、泪流满面，因为耶和华的子民将要被掳。

恶人虚张声势，正直人谨慎行事。
