‘ Jehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather’s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.

“ Jehonadab, the son of Rekab, ordered his children not to drink wine. And they have kept his command. To this day they do not drink wine. They obey the command Jehonadab gave their people long ago. But I have spoken to you again and again. In spite of that, you have not obeyed me.

The command that Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept, and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father’s command. I have spoken to you persistently, but you have not listened to me.

The Recabites do not drink wine to this day because their ancestor Jehonadab told them not to. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you refuse to obey me.

They are a rebellious people, deceptive children, children who do not want to listen to the LORD’s instruction.

Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares.She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:“ How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge?If you respond to my warning, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words.Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention,since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction,I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you,when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you.Then they will call me, but I won’t answer; they will search for me, but won’t find me.Because they hated knowledge, didn’t choose to fear the LORD,were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction,they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes.For the apostasy of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.But whoever listens to me will live securely and be undisturbed by the dread of danger.”

Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention but followed their own advice and their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward.Since the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until today, I have sent all my servants the prophets to you time and time again.However, my people wouldn’t listen to me or pay attention but became obstinate; they did more evil than their ancestors.

Why was no one there when I came? Why was there no one to answer when I called? Is my arm too weak to redeem? Or do I have no power to rescue? Look, I dry up the sea by my rebuke; I turn the rivers into a wilderness; their fish rot because of lack of water and die of thirst.

“ From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this very day— twenty-three years— the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed.The LORD sent all his servants the prophets to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed or even paid attention.

For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again,‘ Obey me.’

But the LORD, the God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of his messengers, sending them time and time again, for he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.

But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.

I will do this because they have not listened to my words”— this is the LORD’s declaration—“ the words that I sent to them with my servants the prophets time and time again. And you too have not listened.” This is the LORD’s declaration.

You were patient with them for many years, and your Spirit warned them through your prophets, but they would not listen. Therefore, you handed them over to the surrounding peoples.

They have turned their backs to me and not their faces. Though I taught them time and time again, they do not listen and receive discipline.
