Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they would be the Lord’s people, and between the king and the people.

“ Therefore this is what the Lord says:‘ You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming release, each one to his brother and each to his neighbor. Behold, I am proclaiming a release to you,’ declares the Lord,‘ to the sword, to the plague, and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord anointed me To bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners;

Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let’s get grain so that we may eat and live.”And there were others who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.”There also were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.And now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”Then I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.So I thought it over and contended with the nobles and the leading people, and said to them,“ You are lending at interest, each to his brother!” Therefore, I held a great assembly against them.And I said to them,“ We, according to our ability, have redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?” Then they were silent and could not find a word to say.So I said,“ The thing which you are doing is not good; should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the taunting of the nations, our enemies?And likewise I, my brothers, and my servants are lending them money and grain. Please, let’s do without this interest.Please, give back to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, as well as the hundredth part of the money and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil that you are charging as interest from them.”Then they said,“ We will give it back and will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say.” So I called the priests and made them take an oath to act in accordance with this promise.I also shook out the front of my garment and said,“ So may God shake out every person from his house and from his possessions who does not keep this promise; just so may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said,“ Amen!” And they praised the Lord. Then the people acted in accordance with this promise.

And the king went up to the house of the Lord and every man of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, the prophets, and all the people, from the small to the great; and he read in their presence all the words of the Book of the Covenant which was found in the house of the Lord.And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep His commandments, His provisions, and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.

‘ Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service.He shall be with you as a hired worker, as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee.He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers.For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale.You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.As for your male and female slaves whom you may have— you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you.You may also acquire them from the sons of the foreign residents who reside among you, and from their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession.You may also pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another.

“ If your fellow countryman, a Hebrew man or woman, is sold to you, then he shall serve you for six years, but in the seventh year you shall set him free.

“ Now because of all this We are making an agreement in writing; And on the sealed document are the names of our leaders, our Levites, and our priests.”Now on the sealed document were the names of: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah,Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah,Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch,Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah,Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch,Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin,Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah. These were the priests.And the Levites: Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, and Kadmiel;also their brothers Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah,Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah,Hodiah, Bani, and Beninu.The leaders of the people: Parosh, Pahath moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani,Bunni, Azgad, Bebai,Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,Ater, Hezekiah, Azzur,Hodiah, Hashum, Bezai,Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai,Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir,Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua,Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah,Hoshea, Hananiah, Hasshub,Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek,Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah,Ahiah, Hanan, Anan,Malluch, Harim, and Baanah.

They entered into the covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and soul;and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel was to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.Moreover, they made an oath to the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting, trumpets, and with horns.All Judah rejoiced concerning the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought Him earnestly, and He let them find Him. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.

The king went up to the house of the Lord with all the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the Levites, and all the people, from the greatest to the least; and he read in their presence all the words of the Book of the Covenant which was found in the house of the Lord.Then the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord to walk after the Lord, and to keep His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that are written in this book.Furthermore, he made all who were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin stand with him. So the inhabitants of Jerusalem acted in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the sons of Israel, and made all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. Throughout his lifetime they did not turn from following the Lord God of their fathers.

“ Now you shall sow your land for six years and gather in its yield,but in the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie uncultivated, so that the needy of your people may eat; and whatever they leave the animal of the field may eat. You are to do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

“ If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years; but on the seventh he shall leave as a free man without a payment to you.If he comes alone, he shall leave alone; if he is the husband of a wife, then his wife shall leave with him.If his master gives him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall belong to her master, and he shall leave alone.

Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, so that His burning anger may turn away from us.

“ At the end of seven years each of you shall set free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you and has served you for six years, and you shall send him out free from you.” But your forefathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear to Me.Although recently you had turned and done what is right in My sight, each one proclaiming release to his neighbor, and you had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name.

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they would be the Lord’s people.
