Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built cities for defense in Judah.He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, fortified cities that are in Judah and in Benjamin.

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying,“ I have done wrong; withdraw from me. Whatever you impose on me I will bear.” And the king of Assyria required of Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

Declare in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,“ Blow the trumpet through the land; cry aloud and say,‘ Assemble, and let us go into the fortified cities!’

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities:

And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
