You must not swear falsely in my name, so that you do not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

“ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain.

But later they had changed their minds. They had taken back their male and female slaves that they had freed and forced them to be slaves again.

“ But if a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing according to all the abominable practices the wicked carry out, will he live? All his righteous acts will not be remembered; because of the unfaithful acts he has done and the sin he has committed, he will die.

“ When a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I set an obstacle before him, he will die. If you have not warned him, he will die for his sin. The righteous deeds he performed will not be considered, but I will hold you accountable for his death.

“ I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from me and has not done what I told him to do.” Samuel became angry and he cried out to the LORD all that night.

After he went out, that same slave found one of his fellow slaves who owed him one hundred silver coins. So he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him, saying,‘ Pay back what you owe me!’Then his fellow slave threw himself down and begged him,‘ Be patient with me, and I will repay you.’But he refused. Instead, he went out and threw him in prison until he repaid the debt.When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were very upset and went and told their lord everything that had taken place.Then his lord called the first slave and said to him,‘ Evil slave! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me!Should you not have shown mercy to your fellow slave, just as I showed it to you?’And in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him until he repaid all he owed.

“‘ As surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, surely in the city of the king who crowned him, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke– in the middle of Babylon he will die!Pharaoh with his great army and mighty horde will not help him in battle, when siege ramps are erected and siege-walls are built to kill many people.He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Take note– he gave his promise and did all these things– he will not escape!“‘ Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: As surely as I live, I will certainly repay him for despising my oath and breaking my covenant!

Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing fall away.As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.

“‘ As for you, O house of Israel, this is what the sovereign LORD says: Each of you go and serve your idols, if you will not listen to me. But my holy name will not be profaned again by your sacrifices and your idols.

“ But you are profaning it by saying that the table of the Lord is common and its offerings despicable.

“ And you, son of man, say to your people,‘ The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him if he rebels. As for the wicked, his wickedness will not make him stumble if he turns from it. The righteous will not be able to live by his righteousness if he sins.’Suppose I tell the righteous that he will certainly live, but he becomes confident in his righteousness and commits iniquity. None of his righteous deeds will be remembered; because of the iniquity he has committed he will die.

You are offering improper sacrifices on my altar, yet you ask,‘ How have we offended you?’ By treating the table of the LORD as if it is of no importance!

“‘ I will make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
