The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done— they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem.

The people of Israel and Judah have made me very angry. They have done many evil things. They, their kings and officials have sinned. So have their priests and prophets. And the people of Judah and Jerusalem have also sinned.

Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken Yahweh. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven’t been closed, bandaged, or soothed with oil.

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the house of Israel is ashamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,

Your princes are rebellious and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes and follows after rewards. They don’t defend the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.

Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

I said,“ Please listen, you heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Isn’t it for you to know justice?You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;who also eat the flesh of my people, and peel their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as meat within the cauldron.Then they will cry to Yahweh, but he will not answer them. Yes, he will hide his face from them at that time, because they made their deeds evil.”Yahweh says concerning the prophets who lead my people astray; for those who feed their teeth, they proclaim,“ Peace!” and whoever doesn’t provide for their mouths, they prepare war against him:

Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, the oppressing city!She didn’t obey the voice. She didn’t receive correction. She didn’t trust in Yahweh. She didn’t draw near to her God.Her princes within her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing until the next day.Her prophets are arrogant and treacherous people. Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.

There is a conspiracy of her prophets within it, like a roaring lion ravening the prey. They have devoured souls. They take treasure and precious things. They have made many widows within it.Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths. So I am profaned among them.Her princes within it are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain.Her prophets have plastered for them with whitewash, seeing false visions, and divining lies to them, saying,‘ The Lord Yahweh says,’ when Yahweh has not spoken.The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery. Yes, they have troubled the poor and needy, and have oppressed the foreigner wrongfully.

Therefore Yahweh will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed, in one day.The elder and the honorable man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.

“‘“ Behold, the princes of Israel, everyone according to his power, have been in you to shed blood.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, don’t let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, on our priests, on our prophets, on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly.Also our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them.

We haven’t listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

Please listen to this, you heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice, and pervert all equity.They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on Yahweh, and say,“ Isn’t Yahweh among us? No disaster will come on us.”Therefore Zion for your sake will be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the mountain of the temple like the high places of a forest.
