The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done— they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem.

The people of Israel and Judah have made me very angry. They have done many evil things. They, their kings and officials have sinned. So have their priests and prophets. And the people of Judah and Jerusalem have also sinned.

Oh, sinful nation, People weighed down with guilt, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the Lord, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.Where will you be stricken again, As you continue in your rebellion? The entire head is sick And the entire heart is faint.From the sole of the foot even to the head There is nothing healthy in it, Only bruises, slashes, and raw wounds; Not pressed out nor bandaged, Nor softened with oil.

“ Like the shame of a thief when he is discovered, So the house of Israel is shamed; They, their kings, their leaders, Their priests, and their prophets,

Your rulers are rebels And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe And chases after gifts. They do not obtain justice for the orphan, Nor does the widow’s case come before them.

Since the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt, and because of our wrongful deeds we, our kings, and our priests have been handed over to the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to open shame, as it is this day.

And I said,“ Hear now, you leaders of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know justice?You who hate good and love evil, Who tear off their skin from them And their flesh from their bones,Who eat the flesh of my people, Strip off their skin from them, Smash their bones, And chop them up as for the pot, And as meat in a cauldron!”Then they will cry out to the Lord, But He will not answer them. Instead, He will hide His face from them at that time Because they have practiced evil deeds.This is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who lead my people astray: When they have something to bite with their teeth, They cry out,“ Peace!” But against him who puts nothing in their mouths They declare holy war.

Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, The oppressive city!She obeyed no voice, She accepted no discipline. She did not trust in the Lord, She did not approach her God.Her leaders within her are roaring lions, Her judges are wolves at evening; They have no bones to gnaw in the morning.Her prophets are insolent, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the Law.

There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her.Her priests have done violence to My Law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have closed their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I am defiled among them.Her leaders within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and destroying lives in order to make dishonest profit.And her prophets have coated with whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying,‘ This is what the Lord God says,’ when the Lord has not spoken.The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery, and they have oppressed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the stranger without justice.

So the Lord cuts off head and tail from Israel, Both palm branch and bulrush in a single day.The head is the elder and esteemed man, And the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail.

“ Behold, the rulers of Israel, each according to his power, have been among you for the purpose of shedding blood.

“ Now then, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps His covenant and faithfulness, Do not let all the hardship seem insignificant before You, Which has happened to us, our kings, our leaders, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and to all Your people, From the days of the kings of Assyria to this day.However, You are righteous in everything that has happened to us; For You have dealt faithfully, but we have acted wickedly.For our kings, our leaders, our priests, and our fathers have not kept Your Law Or paid attention to Your commandments and Your admonitions with which You have admonished them.

Moreover, we have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our leaders, our fathers, and all the people of the land.

Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who despise justice And twist everything that is straight,Who build Zion with bloodshed, And Jerusalem with malice.Her leaders pronounce judgment for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,“ Is the Lord not in our midst? Catastrophe will not come upon us.”Therefore on account of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins, And the mountain of the temple will become high places of a forest.
