The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.

The armies of Babylon are now attacking this city. They will come in and set it on fire. They will burn it down. They will burn down the houses where the people made me very angry. They burned incense on their roofs to the god named Baal. And they poured out drink offerings to other gods.

For I have set My face against this city for harm and not for good,” declares the Lord.“ It will be handed over to the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire.” ’

The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place Topheth, because of all the houses on whose rooftops they burned sacrifices to all the heavenly lights and poured out drink offerings to other gods.” ’ ”

And he burned the house of the Lord, the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; even every large house he burned with fire.

Then they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its valuable articles.

This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:‘ As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying,“ We will certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” By all means fulfill your vows, and be sure to perform your vows!’

The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make sacrificial cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to provoke Me to anger.

The Chaldeans also burned the king’s palace and the houses of the people with fire, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says:‘ This is what you are to say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me:“ Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, is going to return to its own land of Egypt.Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city, and they will capture it and burn it with fire.” ’This is what the Lord says:‘ Do not deceive yourselves, saying,“ The Chaldeans will certainly go away from us,” for they will not go.For even if you had defeated the entire army of Chaldeans who were fighting against you, and there were only wounded men left among them, each man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’ ”

Now the king was angry, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.

The Lord has expended His wrath, He has poured out His fierce anger; And He has kindled a fire in Zion, And it has consumed its foundations.

‘ And it will be that the nation or the kingdom which will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and will not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with plague,’ declares the Lord,‘ until I have eliminated it by his hand.And as for you, do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers who talk to you, saying,“ You will not serve the king of Babylon.”For they are prophesying a lie to you in order to remove you far from your land; and I will drive you away and you will perish.

But if you do not listen to Me, to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load and coming in through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will set fire to its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem and not go out.” ’ ”
