“ They say,‘ If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, should he return to her again?’ Wouldn’t that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers; yet return again to me,” says Yahweh.

有言出妻、任其他適、既出勿納、恐斯邦染其污衊。耶和華曰、惟爾縱欲背予、崇事他上帝、今使爾歸試於我、

主有言諭我曰、人若出妻、遂離之為他人之妻、前夫豈可復娶之乎、如復娶、豈不使地沾染污穢乎、爾從事多神、若婦之與多人行淫、猶思歸我乎、爾從事多神若婦之與多人行淫猶思歸我乎或作爾雖崇事多神若婦之與多人行淫我仍命爾當歸誠於我此乃主所言、

“ If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers— would you now return to me?” declares the Lord.

“ Suppose a man divorces his wife. What if she then marries another man? Should her first husband return to her again? If he does, won’t the land become completely‘ unclean’? People of Israel, you have lived like a prostitute. You have loved many other gods. So do you think you can return to me now?” announces the Lord.

“ If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares the Lord.

“ If a man divorces a woman and she goes and marries someone else, he will not take her back again, for that would surely corrupt the land. But you have prostituted yourself with many lovers, so why are you trying to come back to me?” says the Lord.

If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Wouldn’t such a land become totally defiled? But you! You have prostituted yourself with many partners— can you return to me? This is the LORD’s declaration.

God says,“ If a husband divorces his wife And she leaves him And becomes another man’s wife, Will he return to her again? Would that land not be completely defiled? But you are a prostitute with many lovers; Yet you turn to Me,” declares the Lord.

“ They say,‘ If a man divorces his wife, And she goes from him And becomes another man’s, May he return to her again?’ Would not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the harlot with many lovers; Yet return to Me,” says the Lord.

When a man takes a wife and marries her, then it shall be, if she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some unseemly thing in her, that he shall write her a certificate of divorce, put it in her hand, and send her out of his house.When she has departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.If the latter husband hates her, and write her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house; or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife;her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled; for that would be an abomination to Yahweh. You shall not cause the land to sin, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance.

“ If you will return, Israel,” says Yahweh,“ if you will return to me, and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight; then you will not be removed;

You have also committed sexual immorality with the Egyptians, your neighbors, great of flesh; and have multiplied your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.

“ For long ago I broke off your yoke, and burst your bonds. You said,‘ I will not serve;’ for on every high hill and under every green tree you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.

For their mother has played the prostitute. She who conceived them has done shamefully; for she said,‘ I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’Therefore behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, that she can’t find her way.She will follow after her lovers, but she won’t overtake them; and she will seek them, but won’t find them. Then she will say,‘ I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.’

Israel, return to Yahweh your God; for you have fallen because of your sin.Take words with you, and return to Yahweh. Tell him,“ Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls.Assyria can’t save us. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands,‘ Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.”“ I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.

His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.

“ How can you say,‘ I am not defiled. I have not gone after the Baals’? See your way in the valley. Know what you have done. You are a swift dromedary traversing her ways,

Their names were Oholah the elder, and Oholibah her sister. They became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem Oholibah.“ Oholah played the prostitute when she was mine. She doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors,who were clothed with blue, governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses.She gave herself as a prostitute to them, all of them the choicest men of Assyria. She defiled herself with the idols of whoever she lusted after.She hasn’t left her prostitution since leaving Egypt; for in her youth they lay with her. They caressed her youthful nipples; and they poured out their prostitution on her.“ Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, on whom she doted.These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters; and they killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women; for they executed judgments on her.“ Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her lusting than she, and in her prostitution which was more depraved than the prostitution of her sister.She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and rulers, her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men.I saw that she was defiled. They both went the same way.“ She increased her prostitution; for she saw men portrayed on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with red,dressed with belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like princes, after the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth.As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them into Chaldea.The Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their prostitution. She was polluted with them, and her soul was alienated from them.So she uncovered her prostitution and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just like my soul was alienated from her sister.Yet she multiplied her prostitution, remembering the days of her youth, in which she had played the prostitute in the land of Egypt.She lusted after their lovers, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.Thus you called to memory the lewdness of your youth, in the caressing of your nipples by the Egyptians because of your youthful breasts.“ Therefore, Oholibah, the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Behold, I will raise up your lovers against you, from whom your soul is alienated, and I will bring them against you on every side:the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, Koa, and all the Assyrians with them; all of them desirable young men, governors and rulers, princes and men of renown, all of them riding on horses.They will come against you with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and with a company of peoples. They will set themselves against you with buckler, shield, and helmet all around. I will commit the judgment to them, and they will judge you according to their judgments.I will set my jealousy against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will take away your nose and your ears. Your remnant will fall by the sword. They will take your sons and your daughters; and the rest of you will be devoured by the fire.They will also strip you of your clothes, and take away your beautiful jewels.Thus I will make your lewdness to cease from you, and remove your prostitution from the land of Egypt; so that you will not lift up your eyes to them, nor remember Egypt any more.’“ For the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Behold, I will deliver you into the hand of them whom you hate, into the hand of them from whom your soul is alienated.They will deal with you in hatred, and will take away all your labor, and will leave you naked and bare. The nakedness of your prostitution will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitution.These things will be done to you, because you have played the prostitute after the nations, and because you are polluted with their idols.You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will give her cup into your hand.’“ The Lord Yahweh says:‘ You will drink of your sister’s cup, which is deep and large. You will be ridiculed and held in derision. It contains much.You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of your sister Samaria.You will even drink it and drain it out. You will gnaw the broken pieces of it, and will tear your breasts; for I have spoken it,’ says the Lord Yahweh.“ Therefore the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Because you have forgotten me, and cast me behind your back, therefore you also bear your lewdness and your prostitution.’”Yahweh said moreover to me:“ Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols. They have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire to them to be devoured.Moreover this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my Sabbaths.For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and behold, they have done this in the middle of my house.“ Furthermore you sisters have sent for men who come from far away, to whom a messenger was sent, and behold, they came; for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes, decorated yourself with ornaments,and sat on a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, whereupon you set my incense and my oil.“ The voice of a multitude being at ease was with her. With men of the common sort were brought drunkards from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on their hands, and beautiful crowns on their heads.Then I said of her who was old in adulteries,‘ Now they will play the prostitute with her, and she with them.’They went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute. So they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.Righteous men will judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.“ For the Lord Yahweh says:‘ I will bring up a mob against them, and will give them to be tossed back and forth and robbed.The company will stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords. They will kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire.“‘ Thus I will cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to be lewd like you.They will recompense your lewdness on you, and you will bear the sins of your idols. Then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.’”

He wanted to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.But when he came to himself he said,‘ How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him,“ Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight.I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’“ He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.The son said to him,‘ Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’“ But the father said to his servants,‘ Bring out the best robe, and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet.Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let’s eat, and celebrate;for this, my son, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’ Then they began to celebrate.

“ Moreover you shall tell them,‘ Yahweh says:“‘ Do men fall, and not rise up again? Does one turn away, and not return?Why then have the people of Jerusalem fallen back by a perpetual backsliding? They cling to deceit. They refuse to return.I listened and heard, but they didn’t say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying,“ What have I done?” Everyone turns to his course, as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.

But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God, and you shall find him when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Yahweh your God and listen to his voice.For Yahweh your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

Therefore tell them: Yahweh of Armies says:‘ Return to me,’ says Yahweh of Armies,‘ and I will return to you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.

Seek Yahweh while he may be found. Call on him while he is near.Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him, to our God, for he will freely pardon.“ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,” says Yahweh.“ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Tell them,‘“ As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh,“ I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why will you die, house of Israel?”’

Because she took her prostitution lightly, the land was polluted, and she committed adultery with stones and with wood.

You have played the prostitute also with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; yes, you have played the prostitute with them, and yet you weren’t satisfied.You have moreover multiplied your prostitution to the land of merchants, to Chaldea; and yet you weren’t satisfied with this.

Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?

When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, Yahweh said to Hosea,“ Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and children of unfaithfulness; for the land commits great adultery, forsaking Yahweh.”

I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat its fruit and its goodness; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.

Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say,‘ Return, you backsliding Israel,’ says Yahweh;‘ I will not look in anger on you; for I am merciful,’ says Yahweh.‘ I will not keep anger forever.Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against Yahweh your God, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,’ says Yahweh.”“ Return, backsliding children,” says Yahweh;“ for I am a husband to you. I will take one of you from a city, and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

Arise, and depart! For this is not your resting place, because of uncleanness that destroys, even with a grievous destruction.

Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backsliding.“ Behold, we have come to you; for you are Yahweh our God.

“‘ Don’t defile yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled.The land was defiled. Therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants.You therefore shall keep my statutes and my ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the native- born, nor the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you( for the men of the land that were before you had done all these abominations, and the land became defiled),that the land not vomit you out also, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

then they shall bring out the young lady to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done folly in Israel, to play the prostitute in her father’s house. So you shall remove the evil from among you.

The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.
