While he was still speaking, the king said to him,“ Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped but said,“ I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John replied,“ Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.

‘ The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac who acts like a prophet into the stocks and neck-irons.

Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are lying! Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

“ Sir,” they said,“ we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said,‘ After three days I will rise again.’

The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

“ We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said.“ Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.“ What are we accomplishing?” they asked.“ Here is this man performing many signs.If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up,“ You know nothing at all!You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

Then Amaziah said to Amos,“ Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”
