I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse and an object of horror, of scorn and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them.

The word of the Lord came to me:“ Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its people and their animals,even if these three men— Noah, Daniel and Job— were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.“ Or if I send wild beasts through that country and they leave it childless and it becomes desolate so that no one can pass through it because of the beasts,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved, but the land would be desolate.“ Or if I bring a sword against that country and say,‘ Let the sword pass throughout the land,’ and I kill its people and their animals,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.“ Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out my wrath on it through bloodshed, killing its people and their animals,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.“ For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments— sword and famine and wild beasts and plague— to kill its men and their animals!

There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.”

How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.

“ Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim‘ freedom’ for you, declares the Lord—‘ freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.Those who have violated my covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf,I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.“ I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon, which has withdrawn from you.I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take it and burn it down. And I will lay waste the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

“‘“ If, however, any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation with the sword, famine and plague, declares the Lord, until I destroy it by his hand.

After Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the Lord.One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.Then the Lord asked me,“ What do you see, Jeremiah?”“ Figs,” I answered.“ The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad they cannot be eaten.”
