Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,“ Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words.For this is what Amos says:‘ Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”Then Amaziah said to Amos,“ Go, you seer, flee to the land of Judah; and eat bread there and do your prophesying there!But do not prophesy at Bethel any longer, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.”

But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let’s warn them not to speak any longer to any person in this name.”And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John answered and said to them,“ Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment;

for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.”

These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because His hour had not yet come.

I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, A haunt of jackals; And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without inhabitant.”

For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing considerable business to the craftsmen;he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said,“ Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s Macedonian traveling companions.And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, the disciples would not let him.Also some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater.So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.

Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

But the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and they attacked the house of Jason and were seeking to bring them out to the people.When they did not find them, they began dragging Jason and some brothers before the city authorities, shouting,“ These men who have upset the world have come here also;and Jason has welcomed them, and they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things.

But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was suddenly gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities,and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men, Jews as they are, are causing our city trouble,and they are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to practice, since we are Romans.”The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.

They listened to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said,“ Away with such a man from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!”

saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.”

But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their region.

When He entered the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”

Who cause a person to be indicted by a word, And set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate, And defraud the one in the right with meaningless arguments.

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death.

Then the whole city was provoked and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.

‘ Do not prophesy,’ so they prophesy. But if they do not prophesy about these things, Insults will not be turned back.

For this is a rebellious people, false sons, Sons who refuse to listen To the instruction of the Lord;Who say to the seers,“ You must not see visions”; And to the prophets,“ You must not prophesy the truth to us. As he was talking with him, the king said to him,“ Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be put to death?” Then the prophet stopped and said,“ I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
